About Me
This is my first experience with a web group of any kind. I always said that the web is only good for my job or for shopping -- my line was that if you're not paying me for it or I'm not buying something, I'm not going to do it. But your site has changed my mind.

I can't live without this product...

This exfoliates without any irritation or drying and helps keep things balanced. I've loved this for years and keep coming back to it again and again. A jar lasts forever. It sounds like it might be similar to the Juice Green Apple Peel (which I plan on trying) that has received such good reviews from this site. I think it speaks really well for both products that they sell a small trial size version -- suggests they are confident that if you try it you will like it.

I wouldn't die, but I would suffer greatly without this product...

Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Clay Mask

This mask, which looks like actual dirt that you mix with water to make what looks like actual mud, has some serious drawing power. I can only use it occasionally, so it's best after a gentle steam and papaya peel.

Without this product, I'd have to start drinking at noon ;-) ...

Apple Cider Vinegar

I have this site to thank for this one. I think I'm on my fourth bottle now. It took a while, but I have really noticed an improvement in my skin and appetite. I have no problem drinking it straight, but I'm a little concerned about long-term (since I plan on continuing it indefinitely) effects on tooth enamel. I make sure I don't take it right before I brush my teeth, which according to what I'm seeing online, is the worst. And I always rinse with water really well afterward. Does anyone have any hints on this?

My secret beauty recipe and best makeup tips...

A good way to keep your teeth white is to brush them in the car -- no toothpaste. (You do this in addition to, not instead of, regular brushing with toothpaste). A friend of my turned me on to this and since then, I've discovered that several dentist friends also do the same thing. You have to be careful not to brush hard, since that can damage your gums. It is also a good trick if you've become habituated to smoking in the car.

How long does it really take me to get ready? What's my beauty routine?

Can only imagine this since I don't really get glam any more. I think the logic is that if I don't try I can't fail. But it's amazing that it can take me a solid 15 minutes to do a good natural look.

While Meg's mom used to give her at-home perms, my most mortifying makeup moment is...

I can't blame my mom for any of these. And most involved things with more staying power than makeup. My crewcut -- which was self-inflicted in a feeble attempt to punish my boyfriend at the time -- has to be right up there. But I wouldn't trade that experience in either. It was a good lesson in how people make assumptions based on how you look. And it was wonderful to be able to drive with the windows down and not get hair in my lipstick.

My celebrity doppelganger (or so I'm told sometimes) is...

Hands down, I'm told it's Daryl Hannah -- which just proves that most people only see hair color and breasts. I really look more like Bill Murray with a blonde wig.

  • vexy says, Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check those out. I've heard mighty good things about Blinc's KissMe, so perhaps I will ask my local Sephora if they can swipe some on my eyes and I can see.

  • sweetassgal says, I was laughing about your notion that its interesting to see how people treat you differently depending on how you look. I've learned that first hand. All of my life I had blonde hair, blue eyes, big boobs and was always thin and in shape. In recent years I developed a tumor in my foot (benign) and underwent surgery and rehabilitation time. I started working CRAZY hours, was a full time wife and mom, and just STOPPED working out and watching everything I ate. The pounds packed RIGHT on...I also decided to make a change and went brunette (which I'm LOVING). Anyway, I was in a bar, had my hands full and dropped some change out of my purse that scattered ALL over the floor. There were at least 10 guys at the table right next to me all of which looked at the change, looked right at me, and completely ingored me. Just a little while ago and they would have slid into homeplate trying to help me out. I'm still the same person, with the same face and great smile...but I'm no longer a Barbie. Doesn't really bother me but I found it VERY interesting. Guess the world hasn't come as far as we think sometimes!

  • honoluluhoney says, Ohhh I'm starting to get a hang of this website! I keep hearing about Apple Cider Vinegar....I think I'm going to try it. Any suggestions on HOW to drink it? Do I just pour it in a cup and drink it straight? Should I add some sugar and water?

  • sharond says, I love Indigo Wild's bar soap. I bought a stack of the ends. I think you get a pound for like $16. I use them also for guest soaps. I really don't have a favorite, though I don't seem to care too much for heavy mint. It is just me as my hubby and son like it. The laundry, makeup and facial products are new and I have not yet tried them. I wrote and told Meg to try them out to see if they are worth the money. I want to try and get all natural. I think I am going to try the vinegar and honey. Like you, I have been on lots of medicines and will be the rest of my life. I grew up on a farm and was poisoned over the years by fertilizer and pesticides. They use to come in a paper bag and we would have to pour them into a drill (equipment that seeds, spreads fertilizer and whatever needs to be spread or seeded) It just ruined my lungs and that makes it hard on the heart. So you can see why I love natural products. I find Indigo Wild in our local natural food stores (Whole Foods and Wild Oats). Perhaps you can pick up their products locally too. I find them cheaper in the store and their shipping is high. But the products are good.

  • sharond says, Another lush product that I feel was a waste of money and it is for blonds in the conditioner Marilyn. If you go to the forums or read the reviews, people claim it works if you leave it on several hours. I left in on six hours with no lighting. Yes I had nicely conditioned hair, but I felt jungle or veganese did just as good and quickly. If you have blond and want those highlights out, try shine. It does shine. I was also going to say that if I could get your address, send it to me at email, sharon@lookingglass.com, and I could send you about a months worth of reincarnate. Reincarnate has been discontinued but a new version may come out. That shampoo made my natural hair bring back the natural blond streaks I used to have. I bought so much and the shelf life is 14 months and I am scared it will dry out. It is drying a bit, but once it gets wet it will be fine. The good thing about trying it, you would be prepared when the new equivalent supposedly comes out, but who know when or if. Another web site worth checking out is Indigo wild.com. They are as close to natural as you can get and now they have makeup and laundry detergent. There site is fun, but do order the free catalog. I was going to tell you that I use flax seed almost every day. I am a muffin addict and use a lot of whole grains and flax in my yummy muffins. My brother works for a friend that owns NorthAmericanNutrition.com and they sell wonderful flax. Check their site out, use my name and you may get a discount. My skin is dry, I drink over 100 ounces a day of water, rarely have caffeine or soda's and still suffer. My nails peel in layers and are soft and bendable. Any help in that area would be appreciated. Of course there is cellulite, but I just accept that as age. I have enough confidence to realize I will never be perfect. Also fill me on the vinegar and what brand you use and why? You got me curious. Pop me your address and I will send you some Reincarnate.

  • sharond says, I am so glad you like the Big. I tried Blonde and it didn't make my natural dark blond highlights any lighter. Blonde has some flower petals on it so it can get a bit messy. It did not come round like a lot of the shampoo's. I bought it at the store in Boulder and they cut it off a big wheel. I love Shine though. It makes my hair like silk and it almost shimmers in the sun. I love Jungle conditioner, but still am not quite used to the smell, but I like that it is more natural than most. The smell doesn't last but a few minutes. Doesn't your hair feel wonderful and clean after using Big? Did it seem to make you feel like you had more hair?

  • sharond says, Ask all you want. I was nervous at first, but have now gotten to where I ask anyone anything about makeup, shampoo, you know the works. I only have so much money and I want my moneys worth. One thing I always ask if they have the same skin type, hair type or what ever as that seems to help. I have gotten so that I love Lush's bar shampoo's that it now is all I use. It also is super for traveling. I do have some liquid Sylvia Stout, but went back to the bars. If you buy the bars, most of the time they are about 2 1/2-3" diameter by 5/8" thick, otherwise they are cut to size of a big wheel. The bars last forever. I would say a good 9 months on just one bar, but I always switch, just because that is me. One day I like this scent, another day another. My absolute favorite was Reincarnate which was just discontinued in December (though they said they plan to bring it back new and improved) and then I love Big however only use once every week or two as it is very deep cleaning salt. I drove all the way to Boulder (4 hour roundtrip) to buy out what was left of Reincarnate in their store to show you what an addict I am. I have on hand right now Godiva, Karma Komba, Seanick, the blond and Ultimate shine. Shine makes your hair shine, I love the Karma scents for a while and then get tired of them, so I have all of the Karma products. The other soaps I like however none is a drop dead favorites, like I said, I just switch around. I like Jungle conditioner, however it is very hard to use at first. If you try it, remember to get your hair quite warm and rub the bar of jungle down your hair from about ear level and down. Do this only once or twice or you will get too much conditioner. Sort of rub it in and then let it sit while washing your body. Rinse good. It is an excellent conditioner once you get the hang of using it. The other conditioner that is excellent is Veganese. Both of these conditioners used with the shampoos leave your hair feeling like silk. My hairdresser was so amazed at the improvement of my hair and has now switched to Lush. I find that the shampoo or the conditioners don't work as well alone as they do together. I am not sure why this is. I have fine shoulder length thinning straight hair that can get oily at the roots so I wash my hair everyday. Occasionally I will skip a day, but not often. I am the only person I know who has never colored her hair. My hair was always a beautiful ash blond when I was young and then after I had my son at 32, it started turning a reddish light brown. Now it is almost an auburn color with blond streaks. All natural. That gives you an idea of how the shampoo works on my type of hair. Since using mostly Reincarnate (which had non coloring henna) and Jungle about 3 times a week, my hair is growing faster, coming in thicker and like I said, feels like silk. I would say it took about 2 months to really notice the big difference though the silkiness showed up within a week or two. I have a bad thyroid so I was losing hair much faster than growing it and that has now changed. My medicines didn't, so I personally think it was the cleaning of the scalp that made the difference. If you are near a Lush store, you can go in and get samples, they are generous about handing them out. If you order, they will send you samples of whatever they feel like. I use their bar soaps and like them, I don't care for the shower jellies though I never did freeze them and try them that way. The bubble bars are amazing. A quarter size amount will fill a big double soaking tub with bubbles. I have also used the body butters and creams, deodorants, powders (love silky underwear along with its matching perfume). The powder containers are clumsy so I pour them in a nice jar and use an old kabuki or makeup brush to brush it all over. Karma powder has strings of orange peel that will fall on the floor. I have not used bath melts, facial care, shaving cream, foot care and probably more than a few other products. I have been using their products for about 4 years so you tend to try a lot plus the samples. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all the products are natural so they may have a scent you might not like. With the exception of the perfumes, I don't find the scents last very long, definitely under a half an hour on me. Jungle I know has a weird smell, but I love the product. Heading to the solid shampoo information you were interested in, if you want shine, go straight to ultimate shine, if you are blond, I didn't think the blond did much for me however it was a nice shampoo with lots of something like chamomile flowers on top. Big is in a container and is very salty. A pea size amount makes mounds of lather and when you get done, you will have very clean, thick, lush hair. When I use Big, I suggest using a detangling conditioner at least for the first time as Lush's conditioners just don't seem to untangle all the hair you will suddenly have. It must get off all the gunk from years of horrible shampoos. My Big has lasted me 4 years. Veganese will work as the conditioner if you start combing slowly from the bottom. That is what I do and my hair is like silk charmeuse. If I forgot to answer something or want to know more, just ask. I always know a lot of about nothing!
