What is going on with EDM?

Thu, 12/17/2009 - 11:32pm
  • Makeup Tips, Tricks and All Talk!

I've been reading some chatter on the boards about Everyday Minerals.  Some of you hardcore fans have apparently turned away.  What's going on?  I got their sample packs to try about a month ago after y'all praised them to the heavens.  I was going to order after I finished up my samples.  Have they changed shades or something?  What are your recent experiences?

In a nutshell, EDM changed formulas on a LOT of products and did not tell us.  When asked about it,  customers are told that either the jars are mislabeled (!!), or we are wrong and nothing has changed.  And the makeup now contains some very strange ingredient called Lauryl Lisine that might be causing ladies to have terrible reactions when EDM has been fine for them before.   The company must be under different management or something because they're selling purses and evaluating products from other companies on their website, no more focus on makeup.

The problem with EDM is not so much their products. I know a few ladies have had horrible troubles, due to sensitivities and so on, and that admittedly a few colours have changed quite a lot. Though, to EDM's defense, I wonder if some of the changes might be due to a change of supplier rather than a concious change of ingredients? Considering we are talking minerals here, I would guess the same mineral from different places on earth might be a bit different? But anyhow, the trouble really is their alienation of us as customers. REALLY horrible customer service! When turning to them with anything that might look like criticism of the brand they don't take you seriously or try to solve your problem in a professional, friendly manner. Though, the thing that pissed the most of us of and made us turn around was when they closed down our beloved forum just like that, without much warning.

I was wondering what happened to the forum. IMO I think a forum is beneficial to the company... people talk people reccomend stuff and people buy things.  The only reason I EVER ordered from them was the help and reccomendations I got on the forum.  When it dissapeared... WITHOUT NOTICE I was confused.      Did they ever anounce anything saying why they shut it down?  I thought closing the forum was really crappy of them.  I like their blushes and eye shadows, but Ive found a new foundation now.

I posted on my blog about boycotting EDM several months ago, after they blatantly lied to customers. Before the website changed they promised they would keep the SCKF, and they didn't. So I stopped buying from them, I don't want to purchase products from a company who lies.

EDM seems to be going downhill quickly, which is unfortunate since it seems there are many loyal shoppers on this site! They'd better clean up their act or we'll be looking for mineral makeup elsewhere...

I just placed a $60 EDM order... I really hope the products work for me and there are no hassles.  How easy is it to return things?  I originally placed an order for $40 worth of stuff, then realized with the 12 + discount I could get a ton more stuff for only $20 more, so now I have two orders coming.  I'm planning on just returning the first one.  Does anyone have experience with returning things/ can I just write return to sender on the box?  I was really excited to start using EDM until I started reading these not so good posts :(

Wow. This is unfortunate! I just finished up my samples of EDM (I was a medium olive) which is much darker than I ever thought I was..do EDM generally run light, or is this part of the change you're speaking of, in quality of product?  I received them at the beginning of October.

nbomski- It's kind of hit and miss. I always had great CS responses to issues I had, but I've also seen people with the same issues either be ignored or talked down to. Some people have had great success in returning products that they had problems with, and some were given the run around or just plain unsatisfactory responses. Generally to return items you need to take pictures of them to show what the problem is (if damaged). In your case I honestly can't predict how they'd respond- in the past I'd say they'd so no problem, just send it back; but now it's not so certain. I hope it works out for you either way!

melilala- They don't usually run light, no. Their shades are more geared towards people with medium skin tones- not very much on the very fair or dark ends of the spectrum. I haven't ordered foundation from them in a VERY long time, and without the forum to go back and double check what others had said about changes in colors I don't remember exactly when that started happening. The most recent issues with ingredients and formulas changing with no notice (and old labels even though the ingredients had changed) are from within the past month.. although it goes back further than that (pearl concealers, NR powders, certain foundations being different from what they had been, etc), so it is possible.

a lot of customers (me included) would buy the 12-piece $50 kits even if we needed just one or two items because of the great price, so we won't get to our items for a long time and we won't notice the difference in formula until it's way, WAY too late to do anything about it.  I'm almost afraid to try my foundations that have the new white lid, but I'll make sure to swatch it on my arm overnight after reading a few horror stories.

i think they used to have the brown lid. all my EDM have the white lid :( but i haven't had any issues with it on my skin, i have pretty sensitive -dry skin. I agree with kingtaco, the only reason i purchased from EDM was because of the Super custom pck, it was value for money... i haven't purchased from them ever since they changed their site.. to purchase their f/priced item+ upped postage+US2AUD conversion rate.. it's really not worth it anymore.

It's so sad to hear that!! I mean I love EDM. Their minerals were (are?!) inexpensive and great. I have severe ances problem so I can only use their cosmetics. I ordered a bunch of products before they put the SCK off. However, if they are really changing the quality and what not... I will switch to other brands if I finish mine stock... :(

I am not a regular EDM buyer, but I have bought a few of their try me foundation kits and their full size mint concealer. I like it, but I think that mineral makeup in general isn't for me. I'm wondering if part of the reason people are upset with them is simply because they are turning into such a large successful company, more commercialized if you will. If you look at their website, it is layed out very nicely, very nice graphics and unique art & photos. Obviously customer service should always be number 1 for any company, and if they are having changes in their business structure, that might be why it seems there is so much chaos. I honestly have never had a problem with anything I purchased from them, and thought their customer service was great. I would buy more from them in the future, just not the mineral foundation (because NO mineral foundation works for me).

I'm still using/buying EDM and I still think it's a great buy and I haven't had any problems with the company or the makeup !!!  I was upset when the forum was taken down but to be honest I don't blame them. The SCK was no good for me anyway as I had to pay customs on it and it then ended up being $20 more, so for me I get a better deal now.

I do agree that EDM is still a good deal. Since you can pick what to put into your cart, you can make it fairly inexpensive. I admit I do miss the $50 kit becuase you could buy 12 large items for such a low price. (that probably is not so good for the company). I think that getting rid of the forum seems like a mistake. Some people on the forum were very helpful for new customer...like finding the right shade. I buy my foundation from Meow Cosmetics now becuase EDM started to make me break out, after the products were re-formulated. I still check out their site though because I still ove the blushes.

I hadn't visited the EDM website in quite awhile because my last purchase was an SCK (several months ago) and I didn't need anything else.  I recently revisited to order more foundation and saw that the whole website had changed.  I tried to find the forum to ask questions about the SCK, and I saw that the forum was gone too!!!  It took me awhile to figure out that i could still get 45% off (I think that's what it is) if I ordered 12 items, but that's not as good of a deal as it was to me before.  I had been wondering if I should just go ahead and get more foundation at the 45% off discount, but after hearing that their formulas may have changed and their customer service has gone downhill, I guess I better start looking elsewhere!

I think most of it has been said before by other lovely ladies but i'll add my two cents anyway. I live in Belgium (Europe) and shipping to my country was stopped. When I asked what the problem was I got a standard response about too many packages getting lost. Which is not true. I used to order about every two weeks (yes I know I'm bad!!) and never had a single package gone missing. Fellow Belgian customers confirmed this. When asking if it would return, I got the standard: keep checking back... When you ask customer service anything you get a non-answer. And it always starts with: Thank you for sending this over... Product have been reformulated without change of labels and they keep saying they were not reformulated at all.. But the biggest issue for me is that most product are in fact blends of existing colors and that was easily figured out by the forum... maybe we were getting to close to discover the truth and they shut us down for that reason... EDM is all about sunshine now... no rain allowed!!!

Sometimes things are cheap because you're taking a gamble on your skin.  Sure, it will probably be okay, but if you're unlucky and, as happened to an edm user, use a new jar of product and have a horrendous reaction because the ingredients have changed but the jar label states otherwise, I think you'd be a little annoyed.Maybe next time they'll put ground up lead in jars, but claim the ingredients are the same as always.  Or ground up glass.  Both are 'natural mineral' ingredients.  Every company has 'hiccups', and it's the way it's dealt with that matters.  That's why customer service is so important.  It comes down to trust- we have no method of knowing what edm puts in their jars unless they tell us.  Based on their prior history, they lie about ingredients.  Why wouldn't they lie again?  Gamble with your skin cause edm is cheap if you want, but be aware it could turn out to be a very expensive gamble that hurts not only your wallet, but could potentially damage your skin forever.

I read all the post that praised EDM few weeks back and ordered the sample kit and I really liked it so I went ahead and ordered the 12 pieces so I could get the 45% off. It is a great deal. I got alot of stuff for around $50. I should get my package today I hope. I will let you know how I like it. Hopefully it will be great and I won't have a problem. I was worried about that after reading the new post. I did email customer service about some brushes being out of stock and they answered quickly and really helped me out. Will keep you informed!

Does anybody have any recommendations for dupes of the EDM foundations?  The only other mineral foundation I've tried is Bare Minerals (or is it Bare Escentuals?  And why do they have "i.d." on their lids?  I'm so confused by them!), but I couldn't find a good color match (I've been using intensive golden fair from EDM, though it may be ever so slightly too light for me).  The price of Bare Minerals wasn't worth it to me since I had just bought EDM products under the SCK deal, but the EDM deals aren't as good anymore and I don't know if I want to buy more if they're lying about their ingredients.  I'll probably be running out of my foundation soon, but I may just go back to cream/liquid if I can't find any good and reasonably-priced alternatives.

>>>@lucky_trio: suggesting that EDM would put lead and glass in their products is completely ridiculous.  I get where you're going with the point though you could have certainly put it better.  What prior history are you talking about?  Because it seems that this is the first time this problem has occurred.  >>>@kristaqqqq: "id Bare Escentuals" is the company name and "Bare Minerals" is the name of the foundation.  >>>One of you mentioned the EDM lids used to be brown and now they are white.  When I placed my samples order, I received them in small, white lidded sifter jars.  Am I correct in assuming I got 'new stock'?  If so, I will place an order because I was pleased with the makeup quality.  It went on better than Bare Minerals ever did and the shades were a much better match.  With Bare Minerals it was either basically chalk white or super yellow toned in the two shades that even come close to my skin.  With EDM, I have found a few good matches.  Not to mention that BM is $25 a jar and EDM is $12.  Half the price + better color matches = a very happy girl going to buy EDM.

If a company is prepared to lie about their ingredients, I have to wonder, why?  Is it because they're using 'fillers'?  Or is it more sinister, like adding something bad that may cause bad reactions in some people, but can make others look good (possibly at the detriment to their skin?)You only have to look at the history of companies that have lied to staff and consumers to really start to wonder just how bad things are... cigarette companies lied for years claiming cigarettes were healthy.  Or how about asbestos?  And lead was used in the make-up industry for years and years- people still die from lead poisoning (but from paint, or contaminated land, not makeup.) I question the integrity of a company that lies to consumers.  Are they telling small lies?  Maybe.  But the point is WE JUST DON'T KNOW.  I wouldn't want to eat something if a company is lying about ingredients, so why would you be okay about slathering something on your face when the company lies about ingredients?  Whether you think I write elloquently or not, the point is the same; EDM has lied, and is continuing to lie about ingredients to its customers.  I can't and wouldn't want to stop a person using EDM if they want to.  But I believe in informed consent and that means knowing their history.

Also, the only thing you can assume about the 'white jar lids' on edm cosmetics, is that you have a white jar lid.  It is no guarantee that it is a safe product, or a 'new batch'- it is amazingly easy to unscrew a brown lid and put a white lid on instead.  If you have doubts about a products safety, don't use it and always do a swatch test first.

I just placed an order a few days ago, it has already shipped, which was quick. I believe it shipped the day after I ordered it. A lot of times when a new company is starting out, they offer really low prices and amazing deals in order to get people to try their product, because if a product is really good, if you try it you'll come back. If there becomes a greater demand then the company can charge higher prices. A retailer is in business to make money, and if the market will bear a higher price, it would be poor business sense not to raise prices.

I understand that price raises are part of running a company, but it's more the way that EDM dealt with it that had people upset.  They, in no unclear terms, stated that the Super kit would be staying, then proceeded to drop it.  That's not the way to keep customer loyalty.

A bunch of girls did a group order, so as to get the 45% off discount, and some of the jars were only half filled.  As in there would be 2 jars of the same blush, only one was half empty.  Customer service suggested they shake the jars, and that settling occurs.  But, of course, a half empty jar that's shaken does not magically become full.  Photos were taken but EDM took no responsibility and not suprisingly, customers were very upset.  That's just one example of the appalling customer service episodes that was posted on the forum- not to blackball edm, but so that someone could hopefully fix the situation.  So with no notice, (and while I personally was arranging a group buy for another company via private messaging) edm shut the forum.  http://www.87px.net/mmf/  This website has further information about some of the incidences of edm screwing with people.

@ lucky_trio: >>>I am aware of the ease a new lid can be screwed on.  The 'new batch' term is meant to identify the newly formulated product - what some people are having problems with.  I was stating that I received products with a white lid, so I believe it is very likely that I received the newly formulated product.  Which I tried and liked.
>>>I wasn't attacking your eloquence.  I merely meant that your statements about lead and glass in the products were exaggerated and alarmist and did more than imply that EDM would deliberately and willfully harm their customers.  I don't believe they would do so.   That would be damaging to the life and potential success of the company.  But I understood your point to be they were adding ingredients that have created a bad reaction in some people, which harmed them.  But likening such ingredients to lead and ground glass is a gross overstatement.
>>>Lead and asbestos and nicotine were thought to be safe or at least thought to do no harm at the time.  We only know now the damage they can do.  If by mentioning those substances you meant to connect them and the new EDM ingredients to say that we will someday find these new ingredients to be harmful then I will say that we can only go on information as it is current.
>>>Basically your points are these: EDM has lied and now you don't trust them anymore.  And we can never trust companies to tell us the truth.  Fine.  When testing a new product, people with severe skin sensitivities should always check labels and weigh the risks of a reaction.  This is just good sense and I trust that most people are responsible enough to do this.
>>>>In regards to the Super Custom Kits: it is entirely possible that they could no longer continue to do them to keep the business going.  From what I understand about the SCKs, you got 12 full size products for like $50?   That’s an incredible deal.  Unfortunately in the current economy, many businesses are cutting corners.  They might not have lied at the time you got your information about them keeping the SCKs, but circumstances may have changed quickly and forced them to stop doing that deal so they didn’t lose so much money on the product.  That doesn’t make them liars, just possessing business smarts.
>>>In regards to the Lauryl Lisine: I googled it and it came up ‘did you mean Lauroyl Lysine?’ so I clicked it and Lauroyl Lysine is an amino acid derivative from coconut oil.  From what I read, it’s used as a binder.
>>>If EDM has altered their formula without alerting their customers or disclosing the new ingredients, that is very wrong of them.  I feel badly for people who have had reactions to it.  I hope their reactions are not too severe.

@himekosorano: I wouldn't read too much into the lid color.  I first ordered my sample products several months ago (maybe up to a year ago?) before they had any of these issues and while the SCK was still available.  I got three different styles of lids within the same two-week period when I was trying to find the right color.  I don't have them all with me right now, but I believe I got two styles of brown lids and one style of white lid (with pink writing).  I always thought it was weird that I was getting different lids with every order, but it seemed to be the same product regardless of the lid color.  Based on youtube reviews I had watched around the same time, it seemed like everyone had different lids from video to video also.  I'm not positive that your white lid does NOT indicate a 'new batch', but I wanted you to know that I got white lids nearly a year ago.  It's possible that they have their products already in sample jars awaiting someone to order them, and the more popular (i.e. faster-selling) colors were packaged after they ran out of a certain color of lid or something like that.  Or maybe they just like to use different colors once in awhile!

I knew at the time that I ordered my first (and only) SCK that it was a great deal and wouldn't last long.  I believe at that time, there was already some talk on the EDM forum that it was possibly going to be discontinued.  I don't think anyone knew that the whole website was going to be revamped and the forum shut down and the sample kits changed and all that, but there was some suspicion that EDM had become popular enough that they didn't need to offer the SCK anymore.  I'm not upset that the company decided to make more money for itself (after all, that's what business is about), but I am upset to hear about the poor customer service and possible mislabeling of their products.  I don't particularly care what I put on my face, because I'm pretty sure my job will kill me sooner than my makeup will (I work with harmful stuff everyday as a chemist).  My concern is that if they're willing to lie about the ingredients, I may be able to get something better somewhere else for cheaper.

Nbomski I got my package day before yesterday and so far I am loving it! I got foundation in light intensitve formula, kaolin powder sunlight, soft bronzer, snooze bar blush, queen anne & wood sorrel eyeshadow, sweet woodruff & weeping willow eye liner, golden strawberry & bamboo lipstick, flat top brush & concealer brush. What about you? Have you gotten your items yet? I meant to get the mint concealer & mulitasking concealer but forgot it. I guess that will be in my next order lol.

Himekosorano I just wanted to say I just ordered and received my order day before yesterday and I love the products! I love the jars they come in...the brusges are WONDERFUL!!! I love everything about them so far. Also I wanted to make a statement about the SCK kits. I ordered 12 full sized products and got 45% off and my order total came to $52.25 with taxes (live in NC) & shipping so they do offer the 12 items for around $50. I guess they price will depend on exactly what you order. Also the more you order the higher the discount is because you get 45% off the total order which to me is a GREAT value even my husband thought so! They even put a fullsized eyeshadow in Rock Amethyst as a free gift that I had no idea I was going to get. Just wanted to add my 2 cents about this! Thanks!

@makeupandsuch I am getting Matte and O Glo Fairly Light, the flat top brush, blush brush, eye kabuki, eye blending brush, and baby flat top brush (i have been needing a good set for mineral makeup, this should cover it) Also soft bronzer, the "Come What May' special promo blush, 2 glosses, finishing veil, and Aussie Perk Me Up concealer.  I placed an order before I saw the 12 piece discount and got that one on Monday, which just had the brushes, concealer and foundation, and so far I love it! So I will get my 2nd order soon and send the first one back, I am hoping they are good about returns.

sh!t, they changed the formula of my foundation to include Chromium Oxide Greens, I just noticed when I hit up my stash to refresh my mix.  WHAT DO I DO NOW.  It's too late to return, I have no other foundation because I was counting on this, and Chromium Oxide Greens are a known acnegenic ingredient.  EDM did me dirty.

I used to love EDM and have just figured out how to contact the girls from the forum via facebook.  The forum was great--i found so many people on there to be exceptional human beings and all around great people (as well as makeup divas).  I was so saddened when EDM did some of the things that they did but....am trying to stick by them.  I will order 1 more time and see how they do :)I hope and prey that they get their customer service up to par and learn to stick to their "words" so that we can feel confident in their words and decisions. I'm eagerly awaiting to see how they do!
