"Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick."-Gwenyth Paltrow. Meg here, let's talk, has there ever been a more iconic beauty item than the red lipstick? I would argue that every single woman at some point in her life has painted her pucker a ruby red.
I love red lipstick. I love it. It's strong and fearless and wildly feminine and classic. It's the beauty version of the Little Black Dress. Every woman should have their favorite go-to red. Why? Because much like the LBD every woman can wear it. It can be dressed up or dressed down and if you're not comfortable with it than you need to get over that fear because it is here in a big way for fall!
The great news is that I have found a red lip that anyone can wear! It's true. I've even applied this gloss to a few of my red lip phobia friends and they were absolutely beaming with the results.
Napoleon Perdis is a fashion week staple. He does all the major fashion show makeup and is a genius superstar. He knows not all of us are ready to go Garbo (why not, ladies?) He has his finger on the pulse because he doesn't follow trends. He sets them. He has launched a magnificent Red Lipstick Bar that caters to all different scarlet needs. If you're just getting into it then the best way to ease into this trend (the trend that's timeless and not going anywhere). I would like to tell you about my newest cosmetic bag staple, the gloss that had my girls running to ULTA.
Under Cover Red Lipgloss takes the guess work out of it for you. It is self adjusting, meaning that it goes on clear but works with your lips natural PH to self adjust to the most flattering red. Sound too good too be true? Well, I too was a bit skeptical. Was this going to be like a 1970's mood ring, or those .99 lipsticks that I bought in the eighties that promised me the perfect color, only to have me leaving for 5th grade with a bright magenta kisser? Mrs. Heaton was not amused.
I skeptically tried it on myself and was so happy with my results. It was natural but with a cherry kick! It was glossy and sexy and lasted. It's like a stain but a perfectly customized one. Then I thought "Hmmm, maybe this is the color for everyone and I'm just lucky it turned out nice." It made the way into my purses cosmetic bag nonetheless.
"Meg, will you do my makeup?" My girlfriend was on her way to an ultra-conservative company for a big job interview. We shopped for her classic outfit. Little black corporate shift dress. Black pumps and pearls and a fresh blow out. She was looking like a classical, professional Holly Golightly goes to the big firm for a very important meeting. It came time for me to apply her lips. She is conservative in her makeup just in her daily life and I didn't want to be on the hook for any mistakes. The thing was, she really, really needed a pop of color to her lips. I grabbed the Under Cover Red Lipgloss and said a silent prayer that her PH balance didn't demand a bright, siren red. If it did, I'm pretty sure she'd take her dainty hands and scratch my eyes out. I mean, this was a career making meeting.
With a deep breath, I applied the lipgloss and watched as it turned the most natural and flattering shade of crimson on her mouth. It was a beautiful thing to watch. She's not ever at a loss for words, so I hesitantly backed away as she looked into her mirror. "I love it! Looks amazing." She said and smiled.
It did look amazing and it took all of 30 seconds to give her a breathtaking glamour puss.
Stacy B here! It's a summer special....another "two-for" for you ladies! I have two products to tell you about today. They are like peanut butter and jelly, rum and coke or Visa and the mall...one's just not that much fun without the other. I'm a drugstore diva so I'm always looking out for deals, specials, products that come together for cheap, coupons and door busters. There's not much better to me than "scamming the system" and getting a great product (or two) for a really good price. Especially products that last! Don't worry, I'm not one of those crazy extreme couponers, but I have been known to walk out of a store with 15-20% off of my entire purchase just by watching the circulars and trolling for internet coupons.
Before I get started, I have two special announcements. First, a very Happy Birthday to our lovely Meg! From all the way across the country in Boston, I hope you had a great day! And two....ladies: It's hot. We have heatwaves marching across this country so stay hydrated, get indoors somewhere cool and use that sunblock! Break out your lightest makeup (if you even wear it at all on this scorcher of day!) and carry around some blotting papers. They are cheap and can be found at any drugstore and are a quick fix to get rid of shine. Maybe I'll check some out today myself and review some for you later on this summer.
Now, back to business. NYX Cosmetics. Love them. It's a younger company, founded in 1999, but they are putting out good products for good prices and they actually work. Especially for a drugstore brand. I know I could spend a ton of money and get products that change my world, but if that's not in my cards (or wallet) right now, it's good to know I can spend $10-15 every few months and get a couple of good items. Happy wallet, happy face.
This week I've been playing around with a few different colors of NYX's Matte Lipstick with the matching retractable lip liner. I am definitely a lipstick girl, and treat gloss like the frosting on my cupcake. I like the lipstick for the color and the gloss for the shine. I also find that lipsticks stay put longer than glosses. However, I know that some of you ladies out there find lipsticks too thick, too drying, or just too much of a hassle. Don't worry, NYX has your high color gloss solution....stay tuned for that review in a future post!
There are a ton of color options for the lipstick and liner. While I like the lipstick for color, it's more for staying power than hue. I tend to match my lipstick closely to my lip color. No bold lips for me, I'm too much of a wimp. If you aren't... their red lipstick is a must try. This lipstick line is full of pigment and these colors are bold. What you see is exactly what you get. It doesn't glide on lighter than you expected, what's on your lips is exactly what you see in the tube. I had a little trouble with this because the colors were so vibrant. Even the lighter colors were very visible so I had to play around until I found the color that I liked the best. I ended up using Whipped Cavial, a neutral pinky-beige.
I hate dieting. I hate feeling deprived. I hate that I "have to" reduce my calories and food variety to a rather dull assortment of "good for you/taste just okay" choices in order to look the way I want to! Goddess Granny is sure I'm not alone in these sentiments and it truly isn't fair that some of us are simply not blessed in the genetics department because after many years of reassuring myself that I SHOULD"be a twig" for the way I workout and eat that it's simply not in my stars...sighing here.
That is why I truly enjoy it when just a little bit of something sweet can get me through the day without feeling like I'm the redheaded stepchild of metabolism!
This time time it's NOT a salted caramel yummy to the rescue but one of my/our VERY favorite brands, the always amazing and consistently luscious "Urban Decay!" You are probably weary of my "oh I LOVE this stuff!" rants in regards to every damn product that I review from this company BUT I believe that if's it's good,it deserves the top spot and I have yet another INCREDIBLE new product from my UD loves to babble on about!
Lipgloss was for many of us, our first exposure to the world of pretty! I think even many 4 yr olds now tote a tube of sticky pink with them to daycare? There is something about gliding on a slightly gooey, sweetly scented (and flavored if we're lucky!) confection of a gloss that simply connects with the GIRL in us all! Urban Decay has somehow ( and I don't know HOW they keep coming up with the best of formulas!) created a new lipgloss that is justifiably named "Lip Love" that not only comes in YUMMY shades and our favorite type of wide-angle applicator tube but ALSO is infused with nourishing and smoothing HONEY and other replenishing oils that gives you THE prettiest pout and makes your lips so smoochy that you just might well spend an afternoon lip-locked with someone so you can share the treat!
I am wearing "Taunt", a perfect nude everyday all day and even to bed...the scent and taste IS honey, not a fake or plasticky sweetness but like the stuff drizzled on straight from the little plastic bear container. My lips are so pretty right now and the shine seems to last for hours...well,let's just say I keep applying it, every hour,! Can't get enough of this dessert for my lips and it also somehow makes me feel just a bit less deprived because I CAN enjoy every application of delight without the guilt or calorie counting! The scent is fresh and sweet and really does makes you want to kiss someone so they too can appreciate how fabulous you taste! Not just a sassy gloss, this IS a treatment for your lips as well and the price is so right for such quality!
"Sure, you can't judge a book by its cover but who wants to have sex with a book?" Stephen Colbert.
Can you want to make love to a lip gloss? If loving my MOR lip balm is wrong I don't want to be right. Meg here and I'm going to get to how fabulous the inside of this "book" is in a minute but I want to talk about how PRETTY everything MOR puts out. From MOR's lotions to soaps to candles to fragrances Click Around here to see a package lover's dream!
Their packaging is so romantic looking, it's Victorian chic. Yes, I'm making that term up but it's old world style without being at all grandmotherly. Unless you're grandmother was Wallis Simpson. I absolutely adore this style and I have MOR then a few items sitting gorgeously in my home. The candles are so decadent they deserve their own post so look for that in the next coming weeks.
I used to hate when people would not use fabulous and luxurious items on themselves. I understand we all have the "guest towels" but stop already with the "guest soaps." You could *drop dead tomorrow, use the damn beautiful soaps on yourself already! *Drop dead maybe an extreme case.
I really can't say enough about this entire product line. It's great MOR isn't counting on me to get the word out. Oprah touts the line as perfect as well and if it's good enough for Oprah... MOR's Lip Delight Lip Balm is just that. When I was sent a bunch to review and send to lucky Meg Heads in their makeup point packages I was facing a dilemma. Each tin was adorned so delicately they looked like expensive candies. I was at a loss for which one I would pick as the scents were absolutely incredible. Did I want to put the tangerine tin with the "blood orange" fragrance in my purse when the aqua "sorbet" was calling my name? The lime tin holding "apple" was a top contender until "ooh, I love apple scent!" roomie KristenOsborne88 promptly disappeared with it! It was like Sophie's Choice, I was left with two. Pink is my signature color so "passion flower" was everyone's guess for me. I've been looking to shake things up a bit and break type. I went for the midnight black tin with the silver swirls. A sexy little scent called "Cassis Noir." Was calling my name.
Well...here it is May 21, 2011 and in spite of the rumored "end of the world" today, Goddess Granny is planning on getting dolled up to go out and celebrate my fabulous man's 60th birthday tonight so it damn well better not start raining unicorn's or some such nonsense!
It's bad enough to have to listen to all the gloomer's and doomer's on a daily basis and to be subjected to 45 minutes of commentary on the theory behind what "motivates men to cheat" (Thanks Arnold for shattering yet another female fantasy!) without literally second-guessing myself as to "if" the world will still be rotating after 6pm...)
I LOVE to get dolled up as do most of us and i usually start the pre-event work ahead of time. Unless I'm cooking, then I have to rely on the steam from the pasta pan to give me a glow. This party tonight is in honor someone who puts up with me, indulges me, listens to me, laughs at me and loves me so I feel a responsibility to pull out all the stops for him! Found a CUTE retro red/white polka dotted dress on the "Pinup Girl" site, have darling high wedges to go with and intend to go with a glam-girl 1950's look for the evening (which he loves!) and as we know, that takes some effort to pull off well.
Got my creamy foundation, blackest eyeliner for a cat's eye, fluttery faux lashes, a bit of silver shadow and my reddest red lipstick all laid out. Of course, the prep and prime work done before the warpaint makes a HUGE difference. I have been layering on THE most amazing and "plumping" lip balm I've ever found since last night! You've probably heard of the coveted and quite pricey "Kinerase" line of skin care because SO many celebs and beauties swear by it. I tell you I about got kicked out of the drugstore (for screeching and doing booty pops :) when I recognized THE "Kinerase" name connected to an absolutely stellar and reasonably priced line available where you buy toothpaste? The "Dr Lewinn by Kinerase" line is the first released to the mass market that combines the extensive experience of Dr Lewinn a renowned Australian plastic surgeon with ingredients that the breakthrough anti-aging ingredient "kinetin!"
Giselle, Jennifer Aniston, Debra Messing...these GORGEOUS girls and countless others have discovered this totally effective formula and now we can as well without having to pawn our designer purses to buy!
It just cost Goddess Granny over $85.00 to put 3/4 of a tank of gas in my vehicle! Granted, I drive a "country girl" pickup truck out of necessity but I also don't have to drive daily and pretty much can afford to fuel up whenever I reach the halfway point...not so for the five or six other vehicles an the outside of the station-lot who apparently either ran out of gas and were filling from cans or arrived on fumes and didn't quite make it to the pump. I don't want to sound like a "gloomer" but this damn gas crunch is starting to affect ALL of us in some way! I find that I am buying less, choosing carefully. Now I believe that a truly cute straw-tote from Target will get me through the Summer with great style. I'll save my "purse fund" for something "name" come Fall when hopefully, things have settled a bit!
I am not frugal by nature but I like to think I'm a smart shopper so when I find a REALLY great product that is inexpensive and fabulous, I need to share with y'all asap!
I love lip stains and pencils: I workout a lot and once I leave the house for the day it's a "drive" for me to get back home so whatever I apply in the am and toss in my purse has to go the distance with me! I find that these formulas cling longer than slick glosses and creamy sticks (which I also love) so I have quite a few shades in rotation. Last week, I FORGOT to put my new, rather pricey, but oh so fabulous and chic "Dolce Vita" velvet lip pencil (Nars) in my purse. I was running late and of course, had a business-related lunch that day. Not much between here in Lonesome Dove-land and "civilization" aka an upscale mall with lots of restaurants except a Walmart. I know...we all know...I was desperate! Figured at the very least,I could find a tube of "Cherries in the Snow" (Revlon, a classic red) that hadn't been mangled by a four year old and I'd be on my way with a backup tube for after lunch :)
Ran in to discover that the Revlon aisle has been ravaged by wolves who ate lipstick and was about to leave, figuring I'd bite the hell out of my lips for color when I spotted the GORGEOUS"Hard Candy" display on the end cap! I was in awe! TONS of products, adorable packaging, amazing colors, many in my fav "not so natural" shades! Lotions, potions, glitters and more glosses and lipsticks than was fair to a makeup-maven! I wanted to load the display into my truck and sort it all out later!
If you will all indulge Sweetassgal for a moment...I would like to take this opportunity to send some love to Sweetassguy. For the past ten years you have been my heart and my home and I feel so ultimately blessed to have you in my life. Happy 10th anniversary darling...here's to the next ten and beyond! Okay ladies...those who are romance intolerant can stop retching right now. Sorry to put you through that but it's a relationship record for me and I had to take the opportunity to tell him how much he means to me.
This puts me in mind of milestones. My next milestone is coming up in 2012 in the form of my 20th high school reunion. This is a bit scary for me as it is the first time a big milestone celebrates an accomplishment of the past and not the hope of the future. It's a little chilling but it also makes me both reflective and a bit nostalgic. It's actually a lot of fun to look back over the last 20 years and see not only where I was but how far I've come. From bad haircuts to good clothes I've ran the gamut and it's absolutely hysterical! So I've decided I won't be bringing back my absolutely atrocious pyramid shaped bob but I am all about some of the less heavy and more youthful makeup looks of my past. The best of the best of these looks...fresh, sweet, kissable pink shimmer lips!
Somewhere between my "everything is an earthy shade of brown" makeup phase to my obsession with "super sparkly cat's eyes" I've forgotten the simplistic perfection of a simple pink pout. Worn best with softly illuminated eyes and a dewey complexion, the shimmer of soft pink lips brings about thoughts of spring picnics and outdoor shopping bazaars. I love the look and am happy it came back to me because it's one look my overly ruddy complexion can pull off. Seriously, it's quite fetching on me! My husband even complimented me on it this evening and asked what I was wearing. He NEVER actually asks me what it is I'm wearing so this is a major coup for me. So, a good dusting of translucent powder to tone down the redness, a swipe of shimmer on my brow bone and a few flashes of mascara have me ready to pick out my perfect pink color to finish off the look. And guess what? I have it! Now were you surprised??!!
Tarte's LipSurgence natural lip luster in pouty may just be the ultimate pink for this look. Taking the cap off of this thick lip tint liner you see how much fun it is because it looks just like a giant crayon! The big, thick kind that preschoolers use to doodle with wild abandon. It's a hot pink berry shade jam packed with sparkly shimmer and I love applying it! I seriously feel like a preteen girl filling in my pout with a giant crayon for big girls. It's actually fun to apply lip color again! But applying much alot or often isn't something you have to do. I've worn it from 7:00 in the morning with one reapplication just after noon and one again during rush hour traffic and it stayed perfectly colored and hydrated all day. With most lip colors I feel they begin to dry out my lips and I have the need to wipe them off completely, reapply a little balm first to moisten my lips, then begin the process of lining and coloring again. I honestly don't think I ever felt that need to go through the whole process again that day. A little more punch of color was needed throughout the day after eating and licking my lips again but the moisture level of this tint kept my lips going strong all day. What's also genius about this particular "stick style" lippie is that you don't have to sharpen it at all losing valuable lip tint in that process. You simply twist the end cap and it brings up more beautiful lip tint to the top of the applicator. No muss...no fuss!
Stacy B here! Like any self-respecting modern woman, I change my handbags with my outfits. I don't go too crazy, blacks with black outfits, browns with brown outfits and I have a couple cute neutrals to throw in the mix like a fun spring-y green bag, a giraffe-print satchel and a purple suede tote for those days I need a little color. Yesterday was no different when I moved my stuff from my staple black leather tote to my cloth giraffe-print Michael Kors bag, to match my brown boots and camel coat.
Here I am moving wallet, phone, sun glasses, hand sanitizer and lip gloss. And lip gloss. And lip gloss and lip gloss and lip gloss. Good lord did I just move FIVE different lip glosses from one bag to another? Yes I did. I think I have a problem. And the real kicker is that two of them were the same product. Exactly the same. Maybe I was hoping they'd get together and make little lip gloss babies and I wouldn't have to buy any more. Who knows.
To my defense (I know, there's really no defense for this, but hear me out. I have to rationalize or I'll feel like a crazy woman!) One was a balm for my winter chapped lips. One was a sheer I like to wear over lipstick, one was stuck in a pocket -- and I really thought I had lost it -- and one was running out (hence the twin...which was new). I decided to purge and narrowed it down to two.
First is my balm because it's still winter and the air is really dry here so this was a necessity for my lips not to crack, it wasn't just for a pop of color. The second was for a bit of color and shine. And flavor. Let's not underestimate how important gloss flavor can be! The lucky gloss that game with me was Maybelline's ShineSensational lip gloss in Watermelon Punch.
Almost every person I've talked to is "downsizing" (or trying to!) this Holiday season: Goddess Granny can confirm that even THE most privileged of fashionista's are thinking twice these days about how to have it all for a helluva' lot less!
I'm personally being more creative when it comes to gifts and I'm combining small items in pretty packaging that will surely get as loud a WOW as items costing much more and I'm doing some "theme" gifts revolving around say a color or something sparkly, with a card and picture attached to let the recipient know exactly why I thought they'd love and or how to wear...it's non-stress fun and I'm not going over budget!
One of the themes I'm doing is of course, related to beauty/makeup and I'm combining some goodies for that oh so coveted "smokey eye/nude lip" look that I believe just about everyone wants to wear at one time or another? I don't think this look is going anywhere anytime soon and pretty much defines "modern classic." In terms of a style of makeup it's a safe bet that anyone would love to receive the "ingredients" perfectly chosen to flatter them all in a sweet little package! HOWEVER, as un-fussy as this lip-look appears, it can be a bit of a beast to get JUST the right color and shine without looking ghastly or like you've been sucking sticky-caramels all day (although that's not a bad idea...:) Of course, top notch cosmetics with beautiful formulations and perfectly-crafted shades are an investment but that doesn't mean they have to be expensive. For over 18 years, the Bijou family, based in Los Angeles, have been personally involved and successfully creating a fabulous line of products that really DO deliver "department store quality at budget pricing." They have a huge following that rely on Jordana Cosmetics every season to be right on trend! I will admit, I had never tried anything in this line before but am absolutely AMAZED at how wonderful everything I now have really is. It's just so nice to feel all snug about getting the goods and still having enough cash for other things without guilt or remorse!
The makeup-fairies that send my products for review must have really worked overtime because when the Jordana Easyliner lip pencil and Pretty Shine Lipgloss landed in my lap, everything changed. For the FIRST time, I had a pair of magical products that went on like a dream almost without even trying. They gave me THE most perfect nude lip EVER I kid you not! Do you even KNOW how many dozens of liners and glosses I have tried in hopes of prancing about like Kim or Angelina or the countless others whose lips manage to look natural only REALLY better? I now have the perfect nude pinky-beige with a slight shimmer look too!
Meg here to pass on a great event! Let's all pucker up and Kiss up to those that sacrifice so much to bring us our freedom! Maybelline has partnered up with Cosmopolitan Magazine to deliver a very sexy salute!
Tomorrow in Times Square, N.Y.C Maybelline is Cosmopolitan Magazine is partnering with Maybelline New York and the United Service Organizations (USO) for the second year in a row to collect and deliver “Kisses for the Troops.” On Thursday, November 11th (Veterans Day) Cosmopolitan will build a Kiss Station on Military Island and invite the public to give a kiss on a postcard for a cause – our troops - which will ultimately be delivered to those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan just in time for New Year’s Eve. Cosmopolitan and Maybelline New York will donate one dollar for each kiss collected to the USO. How cool is that?
I can't get to New York but I can send a virtual kiss here ! It still counts as my buck and love will be sent! If you're always on facebook then just hop over to Cosmo’s Facebook page, upload a photo of themselves and write a note of thanks. Their “kiss” will also count towards the USO donation and be sent to the troops.
