Top Tier Media joined forces with the fabulous Dorothy Manfolk of Manfolk PR. An evening was had by top makeup artists, bloggers and traditional media (I snuck in through the freight elevator.)
These two companies did an amazing job at getting an L.A. flakey crowd to come out on a sweltering, summer week night. This is not easy feat. In L.A. People think they are being polite if they wait to tell you that they're not showing up to meet you AFTER you get to the restaurant but BEFORE you valet your car.
That's the type of mindset that you just deal with here. It's a trade off. Sunny days for shady manners.
Before I delve more into becoming "Miss Manners" or should I type #MissManners (#everything #you #do #you #now #need #Hashtags) that's what's going on with those signs we are holding. Apparently, I not only need to get back to my blog but also to learn Pinterest and Instagram and YouTube. I'm going to try to do a weekly YouTube on here #GODHELPUS.
Everyone commented how lovely everyone looked and enjoyed the party. I want to tell Jen and Dorothy that everyone made the drive in LA traffic (the event started at 6pm) because they're just really nice people. I wanted to tell them everyone was there even though it was 95 degrees out because everyone really cared about them. I wanted to tell them it was about empowering and support and love. I mean, I was there for that reason. That and because if I were a "no show" Jen would never talk to me again. The majority of the people came out in droves and they came out for two little words that can get most grown women to do anything...GIFT BAGS.
Yes, while the rest of the world stopped getting gift bags at the age of 6, women in Los Angeles feel almost insulted if they go somewhere and are not handed a bag full of something when they leave.
Jen and Dorothy are veterens and they know the best way to get a great audience is the old fashioned way-bribery. You know these aren't going to be schlocky bags when these ladies work with great clients! I was very happy to get my Gift Bag, my sciatica and back was not. They were chock full and while brimming to the top with all sorts of goodies. Here were my top picks! Jen was gracious enough to be my hand model as I am in deep need of a mani.
Onsen -Onsen Skincare is getting a bunch of buzz, especially their facial peels. This summer I've been an oil slick and I have been in dire need of a good exfoliator. I'm excited to give this a try and I'll let you know what I think. I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat but humor me.
Meg here! Social media is here and here to stay (LIKE). You can try to "go off the grid." When I do, it means I left my iphone in the kitchen while I slept in the bedroom. I'm the type of person that would probably last an entire 15 minutes in The Witness Protection Program. Facebook Status Update "Can't believe the FBI put me in Birmingham. Any fun places to go out?"
By the way, if you need a Social Media expert, check out my buddy Jen Mathews who runs a great firm Top Tier Media. She dreams in #hashtag.
I spend more time than I care to admit scrolling about the newsfeed and I always am intrigued by the postings on Margarita Bloom. When someone tells you to"Eat Diamonds For Breakfast So You Sparkle All Day." You know already they're giving you sound advice.
With my expert sleuthing skills (It was really difficult :) I was able to find out Margarita Bloom is a luxurious world of retro bath and skin care. It is really hard to go on this adorable site and find a collection that doesn't "speak" to your inner pin-up. Categories like "Hollywoodland" all the way to "The Bakery" make it more like an enjoyable peep show than an e-commerce experience! Let's be honest, I get sent just about every beauty product that comes out. Me buying a beauty product is like an Eskimo buying ice, a China man buying tea, a Kardashian acting authentic. Yet, I couldn't stop myself. I pictured Miss Margarita Bloom next to her surely claw-footed tub (most likely under a chandelier or next to a candlelabra) sipping champagna and whipping these potions just for me! In case you were wondering, I also had her dressed in a fluffy pink robe with marabou and crystaled, high heeled slippers.
Maybe, if I placed an order she would invite me over for caviar crepes the following Sunday?
Without further ado, I placed several orders!
In no time at all, a lovingly wrapped packaged came to me with a beautiful note and inside were items so pretty I didn't want to use them. It felt like using the hand towels in the guest bathroom. Then I remembered I didn't have a guest bathroom...
There are 4 great products in the line, a shampoo, conditioner, body wash and what I'm grabbing for constantly The Christine Protective Glaze. It's hair bootcamp over at Megsmakeup land. Between the incessent blow outs, the hot rollers, constantly keeping the color up and a myriad of sprays, foams and mousses... My faux tresses can get worse for the wear.
You know I pray nightly that wigs come into fashion and it seems as though no beauty experts are helping me out with this wish. I have to keep on fighting the good fight! I'm at the end of my 4 month mark of my extensions. That's when they turn from lush and perfect to ratty and string like with a side of frizz and dryness-SEXY!
I really need to get to NYC and have them redone but as I look at my tax bill, that's probably not going to be hapening in the immediate week or two. What's a girl to do? I am holding onto dear life for my Christine Protective Glaze! The glaze is light weight and the bottle is a large size so it has really been lasting me. Once I'm done with my conditioner and wash my hair clean, I squeeze out any excessive water. I then apply a little more than the size of a dime (OK, maybe two dimes) to my palms. Avoiding my roots, I just run it through my hair. By the time I step onto my bath mat to blow my hair out, my tresses are tangle free and feel-dare I say it? Healthy!
The glaze utilizes Life Complex, a formula or keratin, jojoba oils and silk proteins along with grape and hemp seed oils, enriching olive fruit oil and essential vitamin B5. That's a pretty strong army of protection they've got going on over there so it only makes sense it's going to work. The formula acts as an emollient, locks in color and provides an additional defense against chemical treatments, heat treatments and UV rays, all while adding vibrant shine to all types of hair.
Van Thomas is the hair guru behind this genius product. I'm enjoying all of them but am obsessing over this one so I had to start here. Thomas has had an extensive career in all aspects of hair care including nearly two decades at JOICO.
After a brief stint at retirement, Thomas faced a personal tragedy and lost his vibrant daughter Christine. The loss forced Thomas to throw himself into a new, creative endeavor and inspired this fantastic new hair care line "Christine." As a labor of love to not only your hair but his wonderful daughter.
Meg hair! There are a few items in our arsenal that we just can't part with. We can try the latest and the greatest but we always come back to our favorite tried and trues. With my long extensions, I'm always trying different leave-ins and hair masques to keep my (my as in, bought) tresses healthy and tangle free. I've tried them all and the one I constantly reach for is from my friend Marco Pelusi.
Since I'm back on the market, I've got to get myself into fighting shape! Like a boxer preparing himself to hop back into the ring, I have to get ready for the big match. And by big match, I mean a bunch of dinner dates that I'm forcing myself to go on.
I'm not really looking forward to being back on the dating scene but I figure, like any good soldier-I have to be armed. Spray tans, manicures, teeth bleaching, facials this whole ordeal is exhausting even before you get to the darn dinner. The most important exterior feature? Great hair. Yes, I took my fake haired self off to get the most natural color and I drove myself to see my friend Marco for a little touch up.
Marco Pelusi has not only been named "Best LA Colorist" for years but he's also quite a joy to be around and a friend I can count on for many years. Marco took one look at my dreaded roots and brought me into championship form! Here's a picture of the color he created. With all of the coloring that I do, my hair should be a frightful, dry piece of straw.
A lot of celebrities go to Marco and I know that the one product of his that they cannot live without is his Leave In Anti-Frizz Conditioner With Collagen Color Guard. I am going to post a review I wrote years ago. The description and results are still wonderful. It also explains how Marco and I became friends. Thank you Marco! I felt confident walking into my dinner and my hair color still looks great. My hair stays smooth, healthy and all it takes is a pump or two from your miracle Leave in.
Meg here to bring you reviews on one of Marco Pelusi's signature, cult-favorite products, his leave in anti-frizz conditioner.
Living in LA has it perks! I was eating dinner at my trusty deli when Mr. Marco himself popped into the booth next to me. I had to speak to him. You knw when you're in the presence of someone that just exudes upbeat energy and a great smile and full out beams friendliness it's hard to not want to strike up a chat. Mr. Marco is all of those things, he is simply delightful and I was so happy I got the chance to become his friend. This was a few years back so Megsmakeup.com was not even a blip on my radar (um computer) screen at that point. I just wanted to get to know someone that was so passionate and creative and talented. Within the first 15 minutes of chatting with Marco he was already telling me some great ideas for my hair color.
Meg here! Breaking up is hard to do, it sucks. Death, putting your dog to sleep, broken heart. I think it might go in that order? I'm getting better and after a tough 3 weeks I'm getting back on the horse and forcing myself back out on the town. It's so hard when you think you've found the "one" but it turns out it wasn't "one" I was getting. I was getting a whole bunch of others in the mix. A whole bunch that had been hand picked by Satan. While he was great, the baggage that came with it was more like steamer trunks, if steamer trunks were females with vendettas. Too much of a war zone for anyone so I had to cut myself loose.
Life doesn't stop just because you want to just stay in your bed for oh, a week or two. You have to get up and face the music and move out of Belvedere Lane. You have to dry your eyes and...Oh no, what about these dark circles? These dark circles are not looking good.
Upon closer inspection, the bags were dark and the face was splotchy. Just because I was feeling like Hell didn't mean that I needed to look like it.
Thankfully, I have a new find and I LOVE this! Click around on the site and take a look at the packaging. It is truly cutting edge and everything that I've tried has a new, inventive and cool twist on the tried and true (I can't wait to review the Click Click Lipstick.)
But Houston, we had a problem and I had a face save. Enter the fantastic 2-in-1 from Ducce Cosmetics (pronounced Doe-Say.) Ducce is a new kid on the block, just now doing a push into the US. They're launching in Henri Bendel next month and I'm predicting the're not going to have any problem moving into other high-end markets.
Meg here! Happy New Year! I know, we're well into 2014 but better late than never? Before the madness of the hoidays, I was invited by my friend Jennifer Chan from E! Online to try a new line going into Sephora. The line is called Radical Skincare and it is fabulous! The founders of the line, Liz and Rachel are a strong endorsement that it really works. I can personally attest that these sisters give some great face! Their skin is flawless. It might help that their father is a well respected plastic surgeon and they grew up working in their father's lab. When Rachel developed terrible rosacea and Liz was not seeing results with the current products on the market, they decided to take matters into their own hands.
The duo never had the intention to take their potion to market. They made it for their own personal use but something happened... Rachel's rosacea, an ailment that had her on THREE different medications-completely cleared up. Liz wasn't the only one that noticed that her skin was looking younger. People were stopping her on the street wanting to know her secret.
I know these sisters are fabulous and beautiful and somehow they managed to get the prototype of their product off to Melanie Griffith. Yes, that Melanie Griffith. Working Girl, Tess McGill herself. You know how many free things celebrities get sent? Let me fill you in-A LOT.
Cut to my invitation to Radical Skincare's launch. Some time passed and Griffith became a huge fan of the line. Enough of a fan that she offered to have a party IN HER HOUSE. To celebrate the launch of Radical skincare's arrival at Sephora, Liz and Rachel held a party with Melanie. The party had aestheticians on hand providing facials and encouraging the guests to really get to know the line. I have to agree that it's a winner!
Stacy B here! It's started already. My pants don't fit and we've had one holiday! I'm a whale and it's barely December!
OK, exaggerating a bit, but still. Doesn't it feel like that sometimes? I try really hard to stay healthy and consistent - I even went to the gym the morning of Thanksgiving and twice more over the long weekend - but it gets hard this time of year. Not to mention the external changes I have to deal with living in a cold part of the country. My hair is getting some static, my skin needs more lotion and my lips are dry as a bone.
To think, I wish for dryer, frizz-free weather half the year, and then I get it, and all I want is just a little bit of humidity so I don't wake up with my lips cracking and my eyes red and dry! We are never satisfied, are we?? My lips have been really bad lately, so bad that the skin around them is red, raised, and irritated, and my lips are cracked and painful. I have been sticking my face over a bowl of boiling water multiple times a day, slathering them with Blistex and petroleum jelly and will even admit to getting so fed up that I actually rubbed some diaper rash cream on the skin around my lips. Not the actual lips, I was too afraid I'd actually ingest it, but just around the edges. I admit a lot of crazy things to you guys...
Believe it or not, the good old Triple Paste that I rub on my baby boy's behind actually worked. I have yet to tell my husband this, I actually think this may be one of first secrets I will keep from him forever. He'd be horrified.
While my lips are on the mend, I've sworn off any sort of color, stain or stick. Too risky. Luckily I work from home now and only have meetings a few times a week so I can get away with crazy lip remedies and pale winter lips. But, I still have errands and play dates and dinners with my husband (as long as the diaper rash incident stays buried) so sometimes I want a dash of color with a ton of protection. Not being able to smile without bleeding is disgusting and not something I want to return to.
I was nervous about it, so I tried it on one morning where I had a 2 hour meeting and that was it. I figured if it didn't work, or my lips started to rebel, I had my Blistex in my bag and I wouldn't be trapped long. It was the perfect color for me (I tried Be Sweet, this amazing purple-ish/pink-ish/frosty neutral) and the perfect amount of pigment, too. Shiny, a little color and it lasted through the meeting.
Stacy B here! What a week. I don't even know where to start. It's Halloween, I started a fantastic new job for a smaller company that allows me to work from home for 25-30 hours a week so I can see my kids more, my older son turns 5 in a few more days, my husband was named Rep of the Year for his company and they gave him a 5-day vacation anywhere we want to go up to $5,000!! Anywhere! I'm thinking hot and sunny during the dead of this upcoming New England winter! Or maybe Vegas!! We'll see, but I'm very proud of him! Hard work really pays off!
Oh, and a little thing called the WORLD SERIES just happened and we won!!! Yes, I love make up and fashion and yes, I'm a huge sports fan. I stayed awake for every second of the game last night, I was so excited, I didn't even sit down until the 5th inning! What a great thing for my beloved city of Boston. No matter what you think of us Bostonians, or our scrappy little city, you can't deny that after what happened at the Boston Marathon earlier this year, this city needed something to hold on to. Thank you Red Sox, for giving us hope, reminding us that good people who work together can produce more happiness and good will than two a-holes with a homemade bomb.
Wow, I really feel like I've been walking around with a smile on my face for days! Even though I've started working from home and don't need to get dressed up every day, I still have errands to run, occasional meetings to attend, and pick up/drop off for the boys so I don't want to look like a mess every day.
I have a double whammy for you today, two great Covergirl products that I've been using lately. One is great for every day (when I'm home, or out) and one is a perfect "get me from day to night quickly and easily". My husband and I go out to dinner once a week while my kids torture the grandparents so I like to have something to transform me from work-from-home Mommy, to fun, sexy dinner date.
I am not a red lipstick person, so I look for eye products to glam me up and make me feel put together. Covergirl's "Clump Crusher by LashBlast" mascara has been great this week. It has one of those newer style flexible plastic wands that's sturdier than the traditional bristle wand. I like both and think they are good for different things. This is a great everyday mascara. It truly separates each lash and there are no clumps whatsoever. I do feel it lacks volume, and only moderately lengthens, but for being at home, running errands, or even slow days at the office, this is great. It's subtle, defines each lash, separates them all and opens up your eyes. I have noticed no clumps or bits and pieces on my face at the end of the day. And it washes off really easily so I'm not killing my delicate eye skin by scrubbing.
My next item is my 'you have 10 minutes to get ready for your date' item: Covergirl's "Gel Eyeliner: Ink It! By Perfect Point Plus" eye liner in black. This is by far the blackest black liner I've ever had. It's sharp and precise. And it sticks around! I was shocked at how perfectly black it is, how versatile it is, and what a difference it made in just a few seconds. I can use it lightly for a subtle line on my lashes, or press down a little harder and thicken it up for a more dramatic look. It's so easy to use, it's a twist up tube, so no sharpeners needed, and it's thin so you can be creative and create a serious cat eye. Even if you decide to give it a smudge for a more smokey eye, it still maintains its pigment. It really is like lining your eyes with black ink without the messiness of a liquid. Which is perfect for Halloween!! Glam it up! It's so bold, I would love to check it out in other colors.
Meg Hair! You know when you have a new beauty find and you just want to shout it from the rooftops? You think "It is my duty to help other women and I must share!" My girlfriend asked me if she could send me her review of BrioGeo Hair Care. She's is loving the way her hair has been looking so I, of course said "Send it on over lady!"
Spend $50 and free samples. My latest hair obsession is with BrioGeo Hair Care. There aren't actually that many hair brands that work for my fine, wavy hair. I have tried some really expensive and really cheap-o brands, and most of them are just meh. When I want curls, this is my new go-to brand.
How do you pronounce it and what does it mean? Briogeo [bree-oh-jhee-oh] Brio = vivid, full of life, distinct; Geo = of earth, nature.
Be Gentle Be Kind Cleansing Shampoo is perfect for any hair type or texture. It's gentle on hair - including color treated hair, and it's made with green tea, bamboo, avocado, Vit B5, Vit E, collagen and aloe. No sulfates, parabens, silicones or phthalates, if you're avoiding those ingredients. The formula is made with 95% naturally derived ingredients.
The Curling Charisma Curl Defining Conditioner gives me CRAZY curls! I love it! It doesn't weigh my hair down at all. It's made with rice amino acids, marine-derived collagen, rosehip oil, almond oil, oyster plant (not ACTUAL oysters!), tomato fruit, bamboo, orange peel, Vit E and shea butter. It does have keratin amino acids (from wool) and silk proteins, so it's cruelty free but not vegan. Sounds like it would weigh down hair, but it doesn't! The best thing for me to do is squeeze gently and pat dry with a microfiber hair towel. Then scrunch my curls (maybe add a little styling product) and then air dry. Or I can dry with a diffuser if I don't have time to let it dry.
Wondering why sulfates are bad? Well, some people say they are harmful to your health. Personally, I avoid them because they strip away hair color and that's particularly bad when you're trying to keep your hair red (which washes out more easily than any other color). Here's what BrioGeo has to say about sulfates:
"Sulfates are harsh, synthetic salts that are used as cleaning agents in a myriad of applications—ranging from personal care to household cleaners. While effective at getting rid of dirt and oil, the use of sulfates in hair care products has become a controversial topic for many reasons."
Stacy B here! Happy fall! I can finally say it. I am not good with the end of summer, but once I get a whiff of crunchy leaves, have my first pumpkin muffin, dig out my boots and scarves and realize how cute and comfy jeans and swaeters are...I accept it. :) Now, I am all things fall!
The house is decorated, pumpkins are out, Halloween costumers are purchased, closets are changed over, leaves are piling up and apples have been picked. I am full-on fall. So much, that I've switched my kitchen lotion to a pumpkin scent. A few months ago, I wrote a review about Stonewall Kitchen's Grapefruit Thyme Lotion and how much I loved it. It's almost gone and it's not easy to get (mostly online only) so I was using it pretty sparingly.
Then I found out they have Pumkin Harvest from the same line! I was so excited. I love this lotion. The brand is great, and keeps your hands so soft. The nights are getting colder around her and I've found myself waking up with some dry skin spots as my skin adjusts to drier temps. This lotion has kept my hands and nails healthy and yummy yummy.....It smells so good. Like your favorite pumpkin bread mixed with cinnamon, spice and fall leaves.
The best part about this, when I ordered it, I got a free pumkpin pancake mix with it! My boys loved it. They ate those pancakes up so fast I didn't have any leftovers!
The bottle is really big, too, so this will last a long time. Probably too long. I'll be wishing for Christmas scents before I even make a dent in this bottle. I keep it in the kitchen so I can share with everyone. Which normally I don't do. I am in a house full of boys and if I have a nice product I really like, NO ONE TOUCHES IT BUT ME. :) Mom's rules. If I have to live among trucks, dirt, frogs and soccer balls, I get my pretty products to myself. But this bottle is so big, I'll share. Besides, the scent is really soft and lingers in a good way. It makes the boys smell delicious. For as long as boys can smell good.
