WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CRUELTY FREE PRODUCTS?
Stacy B here! One thing about being on a budget that is tough is that sometimes to keep the prices low, you have to sacrifice something that might be important to you. Sometimes it's quality, or packaging, or the type of company you buy from. Lately, Meg has been pretty vocal about companies that test on animals and how that's not something she's going to promote or support. Guess what that eliminates a lot of? Cheap drugstore brands! Bye Bye Maybelline, Dove, Almay, Chapstick, Clairol, L'Oreal and more.
Now ladies, promise me something. Promise me you'll read to the end of this paragraph before you judge me. Promise? OK. Here's my dirty secret. I don't like animals. I am not an animal person, I don't have pets, don't want them and get a little weirded out when people call their pets their kids. But...(you're still reading with an open mind, right?) I don't want animals harmed. I don't think they deserve to be hurt or tortured or used for experimental purposes. I know they feel pain in some capacity and I don't want them to suffer. I just don't want them in my house. So of course, when Meg said this site wouldn't promote companies that test on animals, I was totally fine with that.
I guess I'll have to try even harder to find products that are cruelty free on a budget! Hopefully that helps all you megheads too! You still like me, right?? :)
I found a great list on Peta's website, you can search here for companies that do or don't test on animals: Wow, what a list. I am pretty shocked. The don't test list seems to be a lot shorter than the do test list! And, less recognizable too. Looks like this will be a good opportunity for me to branch out and step away from the mass marketed cosmetic giants.
I don't have an actual product today because I had a whole bunch of Maybelline, Garnier and L'Oreal stuff in mind for the next few weeks. But, they are on the bad list so I'm going to get my butt to a drugstore with the good list in hand and look for some new things over the next week or so. The good news is some of the products I've been either reviewing lately or thinking about are on the good list. A few are: Wet n Wild (wow, not only a marketing makeover but a product one, too!) California Baby, Burts Bees, Giovanni, ELF, Revlon, OPI and NYX. Phew, there are some good ones on there!
My mission over the next few weeks is to get some great new products on a budget that are cruelty free. I may not want those animals in my house, but I don't want them to die for what I put on my face. I'm also looking for recommendations of your favorite products that don't test on animals! Send them my way, I need some ideas!

I'm with you on the pets thing... not really an "animal" person. That said, I'm totally against animal cruelty, so I can't wait to see what you come up with, and I'm glad you're looking at the drugstore for the stuff! :o) ELF has some new baked shadows and blushes that look intriguing, and I'm going to be trying out their loose HD finishing powder soon... Just some ideas! Have fun!

I t'm with you against animal testing. Looking forward to reading your reviews!
I love animals, but I don't want to deal with the mess of them, so I don't have any pets. I am content playing with other people's pets when I get the opportunity. Sadly, Revlon and Almay were recently added to PETA's list of companies that DO test on animals. Add Milani and Physician's Formula to your brands to check out. If you have an Ulta nearby, NYX is another great option!
Love dogs, have 4. No I am not a hoarder - I have rescued because I can't stand the thought of these animals being put down or remaining in shelters. That said, I do not like bunnies, birds, hamsters as house pets. No, not even a fish. I like that Meg is taking a stand on the no animal testing. Quite honestly, L'Oreal has scads of moola and could absolutely afford to convert to non-animal testing. They own L'Orea;, Lancome, Kiehls, Biotherm to name a few. Stacy is right that we often have to spend big dollars for products that are PETA approved or sacrifice quality. I look forward to what she will bring us.
I love animals, but don't particularly want them in my house. I like visiting them, and seeing them on the street and saying hello, but that's about it. And while I don't agree with PETA on a lot of things, I will check out their list. Thanks for the link.
I am with you. NO animal testing. I am definately checking the list.
Animal lover here! I am down to only three cats that found me. Cruelty free can even go hand in hand with made FRESH in America. Great little unknown company called Nouveau. You can check out my website at BrandNewDay.biz We also cut out steps to go easy on your budget. The best companies and products will be cruelty free because they CARE enough!

It has become a priority for me to check whether a brand is cruelty free or not before purchasing their products and it good to see more brands moving towards cruelty free testing.
I'm a huge animal lover, I'm much more fond of animals than I am of people. I have three cats and a rabbit, and love them just as much as if they were human children. I honestly don't trust people who don't like animals, although I don't necessarily think that not liking animals makes one a bad person (just like I don't like human babies/children, but that is in no way detrimental to my character. I just can't stand the screaming/tantrums.). I ONLY purchase brands that are cruelty free; if the cruelty free item is more expensive than the one that is tested, then I'll either pay the extra money or do without. It's no big deal. No amount of "beautification" makes torture ok, however. I am EXTREMELY saddened (and quite angry, which is why this post might seem a bit harsh since I just learned it) to hear that Revlon is no longer cruelty free (I just double checked PETA, and they are indeed on the DO TEST list), that was the one brand of hair dye that I have used for the past 12 or so years. I did some research and apparently they're doing what many companies (including UD until they wisened up to how many customers they were losing) have jumped the shark for: selling in China. So, now that Revlon is no longer a contender, my favorite drugstore brand is probably wet n wild; it's cheap and it performs well. Higher end would probably be Tarte, although I wish they had more vegan items. Urban Decay, while I'm happy that they reversed their decision to sell in China, has definitely dropped from the top of my list for even considering allowing testing. What you might want to look into is Indie companies, so many of them are amazing and cruelty free (as well as vegan!), some more amazing than higher end brands, and for a fraction of the price!
Oops, sorry for the double post! And sorry that was such a novel!
Indie e-tailers are the way to go for cruelty-free, budget-friendly companies! Check out Silk Naturals, Aromaleigh, and Lucy Minerals for beautiful, quality makeup at ridiculously low prices.
I adore animals and though I'm not vegetarian, I'm trying so hard to avoid products from companies who test on animals! I love Tarte and Urban Decay products!
@robinbird_22 and hrhtracey:Totally bummed that Revlon was added to the DO TEST list. Grr! Love their stuff.

i'm with hrhtracey on this one. i'm a huge animal person...and I, too, prefer them to most people. I often vocalize the fact that I don't trust people who don't like animals. I have never been without a pet or pets in my life, and I would feel lost without them. I currently have three furbabies, two kitties and one doggie....and my boyfriend and I plan never to have human children, just our pets. cosmetic and peraonalI care companies that test on animals should be boycotted and driven out of business, in my opinion. it should be illegal t o harm the helpless creatures just because humans feel they are more important. they have emotions and feel the same things we do. we should be protecting and treasuring them. good job for taking a stand on this issue despite your personal preferences.

That photo is way too cute. I'm into Indie brands and skincare. Cruelty-free.
I'm not that fond of animals -- they are cute, from a distance. That said, I don't think animals should be subject to lab testing. I'm sure there are better ways of ensuring that a product is safe.
love animals and it really makes me sad that they still test on animals!!! Arnt there pedifiles in prison people can be testing on!?!?
I love animals, and always try to buy cruelty-free products! And yes, this means staying away from some mass-market items.
Another animal lover here. Though I hate how messy they are! Lol we had a horse up until last year which was fine cos the mess wasn't in the house but our dog (Misha, a black pointer x boxer) drives me a little crazy with the mess she creates. Though to be fair i was much more tolerant before i had my kids. Also to be perfectly honest I'm more of a cat person (sshh don't tell Misha lol)! As far as cruelty free products go, I love Adorned with Grace and Silk Naturals. Am pleased to see that ELF don't test on animals too. As for skincare ranges, I really like Liza Earle, Green People and Essential Care. I also really like Earth Friendly Baby and Beaming Baby products for my children.
I love using Tarte, and mineral makeup. Also eco tools. There are a ton of great brands out there, this thread is a useful reference.
who loves makeup? me me ME!
I think it is important to know what you are putting on and in your body-- it matters in the long run..
Cruelty-free is absolutely important to me, as a pet lover and keeper

It's very important to get cruelty free products because if it's hurting animals it will probably hurt us as well.
Cruelty free is definitely the way to go these days. My favourite mineral makeup brands are Meow cosmetics and Silk Naturals. Physician's Formula for mascara. I have two cats who I love more than anything (well I do love my bf the same amount ;) ). I understand if someone doesn't love them as much as I do because I am the same with children. They are okay but not really my thing, you know? But I don't understand why cosmetics should be tested with animal testing these days when we already have plenty of cosmetics. From what I've understood animal testing in cosmetics will be banned in the EU from next year so that's really really good and hope rest of the world will follow.
I believe Tarte is an excellent natural brand!

I like Essence Cosmetics, Tarte and Urban Decay as well as the indie mineral makeup brands for cruelty free options.
Considering alternatives to animals testing exist and are just as effective, I'm surprise places still do it. What's even more rediculous is some places lie China require all cosmetics to test on animals, so by defalt any company that sells in China is not cruelty free. A few months ago, Urban Decay announced they would sell in China, but after the protests they decided against it. So I believe as of yet, they're cruelty free. It shows how quickly a company will go from cruelty free to not and vice versa... which ever way they feel they'd get more money. However if more people show we care about about this and stop using animal tested products, I bet more companies will switch. Here are a few brands that are cruelty free: Lush, Tarte, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Burt's Bees, Special fx(unnatural hair colors), Tints of Nature(hair color), EO Products, Freeman, Urban Decay
So glad more and more companies are giving themselves cruelty-free makeovers! I'm a big fan of Tarte and Kiss My Face (all of their washes smell SO good)

I'm also an animal lover and I think animal testing is wrong. I know a lot of people are upset because MAC tests on animals now. I love Urban Decay so much and I'm glad that they decided not to test on animals.
I love animals. It's so hard to find brands that don't test on animals, like you said, more do than don't. It's pretty depressing. Tons of brands are filled with chemicals and aren't even close to natural, so I kind of worry about those too. The list gets shorter. You would think it wouldn't be that hard to ban animal testing, I'm not sure why no one does.
I'm big on Yes to Carrots and Natural Bliss, who makes amazing olive oil soaps among other wonderful body products. They are priced great as well and very effective, check them out! mynaturalbliss.com
lover of beauty, sharer of opinions http://prettylightsbeauty.blogspot.com/
My boyfriend and I have 3 female rats that we dote over, so animal tested products hit an extra sore spot for me. Thus, I almost exclusively buy from indie etailers. They're less expensive, have more variety, and are often made with better ingredients. My favorite at the moment is the Portland Black Lipstick Company: their lipsticks are just to die for!
i use brushes by ELF :)
