ROSSANO FERRETTI! MEG'S ROOMMATE'S BOXED HAIR DYE RECOVERY!
Hi ladies! It's Meg's other roomie Kristenosborne88! Since college, I’ve always been asked if I dye my super dark hair. Up until two years ago, I didn’t... because up until two years ago my hair didn’t grow in WHITE. So, yes, I had to start dying my already basically black hair to avoid the constant reminder that I'm almost 30. I figured that since my hair was so naturally 'noir' that a cheap $7.99 box of black hair dye would do the trick. It did…just a little too well. Sure, it covered my white, but now I realized that before my hair was just dark dark BROWN, not midnight black. Now, however, after my foray with jet black hair dye- it was ba-lack. So, naturally, I figured I’d just pile on some light brown hair color to even out the super dark black dye to get it back to the color it was before – (it made perfect sense at the time). Meg here, I advised her not do this. I strongly suggested she see a professional. I suggested she learn from my mistakes. All in all, my hair became a black and brown mess and every few weeks I’d pick a shade of dark brown or black and pile it on to cover those pesky whites. I had had enough, and so I told Meg, “I am going blonde! I’m over my hair. I hate it. “ Meg “Wait, what? Where did this come from?” Meg here, I advised her not do this. I strongly suggested she see a professional. I suggested she learn from my mistakes. Kristen “I just hate it and I’m changing it all or I’m going to shave my head.” Meg “calm down you freak, I have just the place for you.”
Sidenote- having a beauty expert as a roommate has it’s perks. Meg here, tons of perks, you should see our shower, plus I like to decorate, take care of the dogs, buy liquor and and am a barrel of laughs.
Within 24 hours Megan had an appointment for me at Rossano Ferretti. She told them I wanted a total transformation and so off I went, ready to look into the mirror and see a totally transformed person.
When I arrive at the salon, I’m greeted by an extremely friendly staff. I’m immediately struck by the décor – super elegent and chic, but without making me feel like I shouldn’t touch anything. High ceilings, black and white motif , wide open space. I meet my colorist, Sue-Yi, and begin talking about my hair history and how I want a total change, but I also don’t want my hair to fall out from harsh coloring and stripping and all that jazz. She just smiles and nods because (as I later learned) I was pretty much asking for the impossible. I had two years worth of store bought black and brown hair dye on my hair (plus the remnants of a Brazilian blow out –which apparently opens up your hair's pores and makes it soak up even that much more color). So, the colorist begins really looking at my hair – she starts counting the different shades of brown and black (3...4... 5….6….) – and then she looks at me eyes and is, to my delight, honest. “I want you to look natural and I want you to love your hair color, but we have a lot of work to do - and you are NOT going blonde today, not unless you also want to go bald. ” She started her foil magic- painstakingly talking about 5-10 individual strands of hair at a time, and wrapping them in the magic foil. She was meticulous. Time didn’t stand still, though. I had a glass of wine, Sue-Yi was super friendly and before I knew it (3 hours later) I was over at the sink having my hair rinsed out.
Wet hair=dark hair so at first I didn't see much of a change (Oh No.) However, once they began to blow it out I began to see the subtle, yet gorgeous, honey highlights that I hadn't asked for-YET SHOULD HAVE. Here is the deal: Rossano Ferretti Salon is a gem because they genuinely cared about my hair and were HONEST. I don't know many salons that have staff that behave the same way. I did not leave with what I came in asking for and THANK GOD FOR THAT! I'm NOT a hair expert - they are. It's their professional responsibility - their HAIROCRATIC OATHE to think of my strands first - not my uneducated, spur of the moment demands.
Here is the bottom line: I'm going to get to the hair color I want (though I really love what I have - they don't have them experts for nothing), but I'm going to do it the smart way. Two years of bad box color cannot evaporate in three hours and anyone who tells you differently is lying to you and just wants your money. Rossano Ferretti wants my business. Big difference.
Make an appointment and make it now. Oh, and ask for Sue-Yi. Oh, and always listen to your beauty expert roommate.
Have any of you tried to make a drastic change and have it go, well...Drastic?

OMG... YOU'RE ME!!!!! That brazilian blowout is why EVERY TIME i go to the salon for my 'GLAZE' i come out darker and darker and darker.... i get a MEDIUM ASH BROWN.... and i SWEAR i'm llike a goth every time... AND it doesnt fade the way it's supposed to!!! WOW. I'm going to go the highlights route next month, just to lighten things up and will then go w/a lighter glaze... cause i'm not doing any more permanent color... just the glaze, my "STRAYS" arent that dominant on my head yet. (and i DO like the dark in the winter, just need to lighten up).

thank you so much for this post! (and i apologize once again for the double post, not quiet sure why that happens all the time now)!
I wish I could afford to go somewhere that luxurious. I just go to the place at the mall and hope for the best, not the best strategy, I know, but it usually turns out decent. I've got it narrowed down to two girls I like there, at least. I have had so many mishaps with box dye. I've turned my hair black. I've turned it florescent orange and even hot pink. I've turned it some of the ugliest brassy shades of blond you can imagine and blotchy brown shades too. I've stopped wasting my money on DIY jobs because I just suck at them :)
Stuff like this is why I'm afraid of the whites that are to come D:
sounds devine.. I wanted red hair ended up with darker hair than I walked in with..
Oh my!! You sound like I was years ago....sure that I could emulate any professional, in terms of coloring!! But after forays into the green and orange shades I finally came to my senses!! Now I see a pro, it is very time consuming to have her pick up all those little strands of hair and foil them, but boy the end result is awesome!! So no more coloring at home for me!!Glad you finally got "your perfect" look!!
Oh geez, though I think we've all been there at some point! The Natural instincts brown black is a really lovely shade I've found, and ammonia free. Whenever I go darker I always go with the semi-permanent. I find it gives equally good (if not better results) and it's a lot less damaging.
I have never done a BIG change but I don't believe I could LOL. I do highlight my hair to help the white/gray blend in. I have found a colorist I love at a price I can afford :o)

I do color my own hair because it grows so fast that I could neither afford to get the roots done every 3 weeks nor manage to sit still for that long every 3 weeks. I don't do a big change. I did my big change years ago - highlights and lowlights every 3-4 months. Until one day my aunt said, oh my god, you went blonde. I didn't ever plan to be blonde (no offense, just like I don't ever plan to be in jail) so I stopped the madness and bought my first box of color. I am somewhere between medium brown with some red in it to medium brown with no red. But I did come up with a new and improved method 3 weeks ago. I use Clairol's formula for covering grays (which comes in a mind blowing 3 choices) on just the roots because otherwise I end up with DARK BROWN HAIR THAT IS DARK BROWN. Shiny, but no variation. It is the only thing that actually covers the grays and even then it's not perfect. The following week I use one of my favorite light brown shades all over for no longer than the recommended time. I end up with soft, shiny hair that has color variation, but isn't crazy. I really like the color of my hair right now, but the roots are going to get done tomorrow. While the roots marinate, I put a nice thick conditioning treatment of the rest of the hair to help keep the color from spreading and to give my hair a nice treat.
HAHA. This story made me laugh a lot. So funny, well, of course I'm not laughing AT you. Far from it. That salon sounds awesome. Sometimes I wish I could find someone to handle my hair like that. I dunno, you tell me what looks good, and I'll go for it! But it's hard to find someone so trusted! You were so fortunate!

I wish I could afford to go somewhere that luxurious...
I have gone to high end salons to get my hair dyed and I have used drugstore dye. I honestly have never had my hair come out the way I want it to. It always comes out darker even if I get my hair dyed at the salon. I haven't dyed my hair in awhile because my hair is damaged from dying it so much since high school.
I'd like to be a ginger, but I don't know if I'll ever be brave enough to dye my hair!
I'm too chicken to try permanent color at home. I have used semi-permanent with no disasters. But haircuts are another story. My poor curls have been butchered by several so-called professional stylists. I finally found a woman who knows how to cut curly hair -- AND her rates are reasonable. You better believe I'm sticking with her. :)
Waoooo...amazing salon...I just loved the style

I have never dyed my hair-- just feeling the fried strands of friends with repeated dye jobs has been enough to scare me off pretty much forever!
This review made me giggle! I've never really done anything drastic to my hair. I've been light blonde since I was a kid and I need some help achieving it now, but I do it at home usually. A couple of years ago I tried toning down the blonde to a dark blonde/light brown, but I literally washed $200 down the drain because the color wouldn't stay! And it made me look kind of blah anyway.
Yes, when I was 15 and permed my hair. Drastically. Never had a perm again!

I've been coloring my hair since last year. My whites at the crown of my head were making me look older than my age! I can be clumsy so I started with salon, all went well, the stylist always give me something different from what I requested. I guess he knows what is best for me! nothing drastic though as I work in a bank.
Aw that is cute with the MEG interjections! I used to get on great with box dyes meself. Happppppy XMAS Gals!!
who loves makeup? me me ME!
I box color my hair all the time. IMO it looks good too. I can't justify spending that much money on getting my hair colored anymore now that I don't have a regular job and have a baby to feed.

I've never dyed my hair but I get asked all the time if I do! Definitely appreciate honey beauticians. If you're going to be touching my hair or nails I'd prefer the truth!
honesty is a must. your hair falling out is not going to bring business, but some salons either dont care or they are not educated enough.

Hahaha thank you for this post, it was so funny, I couldn't help chuckling at "but we have a lot of work to do - and you are NOT going blonde today, not unless you also want to go bald." Every girl NEEDS a GOOD hairdresser!

this post is so funny and awesome! loved reading it meg!
I don't dye my hair, ever since my yellow haired experience in high school. Once in a while I'll get some highlights put in, but generally I'm lucky that my hair naturally has highlights and lowlights and I enjoy the color. I'm so happy your hair didn't fall out, lol! Sounds like Meg found you a great hairdresser, which is so important!

I dyed my hair red and was hoping for something subtle. What I got was RED! I kept it for a little while because it was kinda fun, then I was done. I was able to use Color Oops to get most of the crazy red out.

Oh no, that's horrible. Haha, at least you got it fixed! I am terrified of boxed dye! Back in HS I thought it would be a good idea to go platinum blonde and since my hair was already blonde I didn't think the change would be that drastic. But BOY was I wrong! It looked horrible...it actually came out YELLOW and I ended up frying my hair beyond repair. D:
I once ended up with bright red on the sides and auburn on the back, then covered it all with a dark, reddish purple. Took over a year to grow out the roots enough to have a short cut with natural color. Have not touched the dye since!

I'm glad it ended up working out for you! I'm worried I'll go white soon- my grandma started to go white in her 20's- and my hair is like yours, super dark but not black per se. I have lots of red and dark brown in it too and I know if I ever dyed my hair one color it would look really unnatural.
the moment i color my hair i want a different color.
I used to self-box color my hair but I finally got tired of brassy orange/brown hair. Now I pay the money to have it professionally colored and it's worth it. But I think that's a lesson everyone has to learn the hard way.
I used to dye my hair brown and while I wasn't intending on a drastic change, within a few weeks the colour has lightened so much that it was closer to a brassy yellow then brown. I've since been happy with my black hair.
box color never works!! if only it was that easy!! haha
I'm cheap, so I go with box color. I think I found one that works for me. Normally, I get my hair cut on a whim, and I go to something like a Borics where I can just walk in. I'm determined to find a regular stylist now. I need to start asking around for one in my town. I would love to have someone who knows me and my hair well enough to trust them to do what they think it best.
I always see a pro!!! I made some bad hair mistakes in highschool/ university.
Love this post. Love the body and I love Meg's interjections :) I am glad everything worked out and wish you posted a before and after pic :) I have dyed my hair at home twice and have regretted it both times. One was just about 2 months ago and now my roots are growing out and it looks bad. I'm not sure what to do as I don't have the funds to go have a professional fix it....but I think I may have to suck it up and shell out the cash. And then never dye my hair myself again!!
I've been getting salon highlights for a few years now. Even though it is expensive I think it is definitely better than trying to do it yourself.
I'm not too comfortable with drastic changes so I've not attempted any, including major hair colour changes.
drastic changes don't work for me
I would love to go red but it is a lot of maintenance.
Wish I could afford to go pro to get my hair done, im starting to grey and I need to fix it.
Sounds like a great experience! I've never really colored my hair, as I'm Asian and have jet black hair that wouldn't look natural with any other color but I'm always jealous of people who can do drastic changes!
xoxo
I haven't dyed my hair in several years. But I used to use box dye. When I first started using dye I wanted to go reddish brown. My hair ended up really red, too red for my skintone. Fortunately it toned down after washing a few times.
I'm way to scared to dye my hair, my mom got me paranoid by telling me that dying my hair will make it fall out! The most drastic thing I have done to my hair is chop it off...14 inches! I cannot wait for it to grow back :(
I wish I had a roommate like Meg :)
i've never had a pro hair dye job...i usually just dye my hair black anyhow :/
<3
I dont have an experience with dye, but my stylist I went to in college wanted to try this new cutting technique she'd just learned at a conference in NC. It was cute and easy to style. Then I back to have it trimmed and she had no idea what she'd done. 3 hair cuts later, I finally went to someone else and spent the next 2 years trying to grow out several bad haircuts. Never again will I let someone try something they just learned!
very cool, i don't dye my hair.
