GEL MANICURES! I LOVE THEM, BEEN BUYING GIFT CERTIFICATES AS PRESENTS!
Meg here! Writing from The Big Apple, going to attend The Gotham Awards tonight where I will be sure to ask the A-List what beauty items/gifts they're buying for the holidays. Yes, Roxy will be with me as well. I'll be sure to ask her too.
A funny thing happened to me Saturday in the city. I went to go get a manicure, because it had been Three Weeks. Yes, you read that right. My color was still on, although starting to grow out at the nail base. I only had 2 slight chips. I had to request something new and exciting, I had to request my NATURAL nails be cut and then filed. Cut!! My natural nails needed to be cut and filed! As a nervous Nellie disgusting nail-biter, I thought I would have a better chance seeing Jesus then seeing this day! How did it happen? Let me tell you all about my new obsession, Gel manicures. The love affair started in August and I need you to run through my nail history time line to understand.
10 years-18 years old: Natural, painted still always biting.
18 years-33 years old: Acrylic Tips, sometimes silk. Always on. Would take periodic brakes because my real nails underneath would a. either get too thin or b. become discolored and disgusting. This vicious cycle would keep me running to get the fake nails put on to hide the damage I had done to the real ones.
34 years old: Still Acrylic tips but only for television or special occasions. Trying to get the real ones to just look decent.
35 years old: Try the new "gel/shellac" craze. Do it consistently. From August to this past Sat. (end of November) giving my nails a break with just a standard manicure with regular color right now. I'm just doing this break because I heard it is important to take a break every now and again so your nails don't get too thin. I have yet to experience this, decided to err on the side of caution.
What is the difference? Just like in a regular manicure, cuticles are pushed back and nails are filed. Nails are also buffed, so the gel adheres more strongly. Next a coat of gel “polish” is applied to each nail, then drying time under a UV Light in between. A second coat is applied and then allowed to dry again. This process is repeated about 3 times on each hand.
I first tried this because I would be traveling to South America for 10 days of an extreme schedule. Left little time for sleep, never mind time to tend to my nails myself and I didn't know if there would be any nail salons on the itinerary. Guess what? No nail salons on the itinerary
. I would not stop raving about how awesome my nails were holding up to my friend Jo Piazza. I couldn't believe how they looked salon perfect even after rigorous hikes and packing. I thought I was driving her crazy until we got back to the States and she sent me a tweet "Loving my Gel Manicure that @Megsmakeup insisted I get!" I had converted her. It makes sense. Jo is flying around the country doing all sorts of TV interviews for her book "Celebrity Inc" so she needs camera ready nails without a lot of maintenance.
The color that I've been picking pretty consistently for this season is "Asphalt" a super deep charcoal. My nails look amazing for two weeks, if I push (and no, they don't look "amazing" at 3 weeks but still decent) I can get 3 weeks. This is great for a busy person that needs great looking hands.
The cons? These are not "cons" for me, but complaints I have heard some say. "It's hard to take off" yes. I love that about it. However, if you do constant polish changes then this may not be for you. I never try to remove my own gel manicure. I have the nail technician do it. She soaks cotton balls in acetone and then wraps my fingers in tin foil. I sit like that for about 5 minutes. Then she takes her tools and scrapes it off. My nails still look super healthy and strong. I swear, it's amazing how great they look. This costs an extra $10 at my salon but I don't need hassle over $10 so it's just easier to have it removed right where I'm having the new color applied.
The price? It varies city to city. It cost me $45 at my salon in West Hollywood. It really costs $55, I always tip at least 20% because I believe tipping is how we get into Heaven. It's pricier then the normal manicure but it lasts so much longer I think it evens out. I got my nails regular color Saturday and I'm looking at 2 chips as I type this. I'm never going back. I'm sticking to gels!
How about you? Have you tried gel mani's? What did you think? I'll purchased 3 gift certificates at my salon to give to friends for their birthdays. I'm sure once they try it they'll become die-hard gel fanatics like me!

Nice nail history! haha. It's my birthday today, and a friend's birthday today too, so we're going to go get manicures together! Not gel manis, but normal ones. Never done it the gel way, but looking forward to a little birthday pampers! Have fun at The Gotham Awards. Report back! :o)

nice ... i tried few times but i get bored having the same color....this is me :) doing my nails 3 times a week... it is, as you already said, the best practice when you don't have the time...i usually do the gel when i am going to vacation or in business travel just for a safe manicure...thanks for the review
definitely will be trying this this month since the holidays suck the life out of me and all of my time ... thanks for the in depth review
I agree with Lucy05. As a Pilates Instructor I am constantly changing springs, grabbing equipment and smashing my nails into things (if you haven't tried equipment Pilates you must do so) so the gel manicure really lasts. On the other hand, I really love playing with different colors - right now I have wocka-wocka red from the Muppets OPI collection with an OPI Sephora glitter (and I mean CHUNKS of glitter) topcoat. I really love it this week, but next week I am thinking I want just the red. My friends swear by the gels and my manicure tech can do them. I just think I want more options.
i invested in gel polish and kit to make it 123 for me to get salon results in my own home.

details, PLEASE! I have some Shellac supplies in my cart at Amazon but I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the choices!
I stop applying nail polish as I hate the chipping and removal process. I would love to try gel manicures for vacations/travels when I want to look good :).
Good for special occasions :)))

I am more of a DIY person. Anyone tried any good ones? I saw a set at Ulta but can't remember the name. I'd love to get my nails done with gel for vacations!!

Maybe for a special occasion, I'd do this. But I really like the variety of DIY regular ones.

I've wanted to try this for a while, but I've read about some bad things happening if technician isn't careful :/
I have been using acrylic for some time now but my best friend swears by the gel manicure! I've really been debating on making the switch especially since her nails always look great. I think I will give it a try.
i've never actually got my nails done in my life, i saw a girl at work when I was 16 she came in with bleeding nails because the lady who did her nails cut her and just ignored it! and i get freaked out when they start chipping/filing the nails lol weird phobia

I think gel polish looks fantastic! I want to try it, but cannot currently afford the salon. My friend bought a little UV lamp and does her own nails. I think that I will try the gel polish that uses an activator instead of the UV lamp. You can buy this kind at a beauty supply store, or Sally Hansen started selling their version in drugstores. It is more expensive than regular polish, but cheaper (and more hygienic) than most salons.
I would do this for an extended vacation or wedding or something like that, but I just don't think the removal process is good for your nails - they have to SOAK them in acetone. Plus I like getting my mani/pedi every 2 weeks and can live with some chipping, because, hello, your nails still grow out and you get that gap at the base.
I love a manicure that lasts! But i also like to change it up about every week and i love peeling off the nailpolish when it starts to chip... I find that using a good top and bottom coat (Orly top to bottom is amazing) and a quality polish like essie, will make my manicure last 5 days to a week without any chips!
Looks cool, but I'm really not into nails myself.
I tried a Shellac Mani at my salon and then did my research on everything out there...and bought my own equipment. You do need to research it well but the stuff is awesome! Also, if it doesn't last on you...it could be your technician...there is a definite right and wrong way to apply.

I prefer regular manicures back when I was maintaining my nails. I enjoyed trying out different colours and I felt that it was easier to do that with the regular manicures. Perhaps gel manicure will be more suitable for my next break when I want to relax and not bother with anything.
I also have wanted to try the gel manicure.... forever. I think I may give it a try for the holidays. My nails are a horror show in the cold weather. It's almost embarrassing right now. Thanks for the info!
I've been curious about these....however at this time in my life, my nails are healthy and long...so just need to add color to have a fab look!
I haven't tried gel manicures yet. I'm hoping to let my nails grow out longer before I do but I am worried about being sick of a color but being stuck with it for two weeks
This sounds intersting to me!! i wasnt born with the Nail polish apply gene!! haha maybe ill stop for a quick gel mani while X mas shopping!!
I've heard GG rave over this, thanks for your take as well. One day, I will definitely have to check this out. Thanks for the run down on your nail history, looks like i've made a wise choice going for the gel manicure!
I realllyyy need a new mani!
I want to try this!!
I've had acrylics on for just over a year now and love them! My nails are naturally really thin so I can't really get the length or shape I want without them. I have also tried shallak and liked it but acrylics are more convenient just because more places offer it.
I think I will try it for Christmas, such a great idea for travelling!
My friend was just telling me about how awesome these are. She has weak and thin nails that are hard for her to grow out, but since she's had the gel manicures her nails are much longer and stronger. Mine have been weak lately because I've been painting them more often so I just might look into this to get them back into shape.

I consider manicures to be a treat. It's great to be able to relax while someone works on my nails.
i really want to try this! My nails just seem to hate polish or the polish remover and crack! It is so annoying.
who loves makeup? me me ME!
I'm so scared of getting any kind of fake nails, I'm scared I'll stab myself in the eye when I mess with my contacts... Luckily my nails are naturally very strong and thick.
I am soooo excited to try this!!!
Gracie
I'd never even heard of this. Is the color translucent? That's the image I'm getting from "gel." My nails grow like weeds, especially when I'm not stressed, so I'm not really into the whole fake nails thing.
I haven't ever had a gel mani. The only manicure I ever got, they clipped away my cuticles and left me sore and bleeding... right before my wedding. :( Needless to say I'm hesitant to ever let anyone touch my nails again. :/
I haven't tried gel manicures yet, but I really want to try this now.

I've been really interested in the gel manicure craze, but have yet to try it. I have a really hard time getting regular nail polish to not chip so this sounds really good! I bought some gel polish from the drugstore just to try it and it ended up being really crappy and super hard to take off. I definitely think it's time I treated myself to real gel manicure. I love the timeline for your nail history! Cute!
I've never tried gel-mani because I don't like the way it looks. I prefer more natural nails, even if mine suck! In fact, my proposition for 2012 is to get better at doing my nails ;)
I have a phobia of nail salons -- first and only visit gave me not one but TWO infected cuticles because the tech cut them. Ugh.
I always thought gel ruined your nails. I am going to have to try them.
I've never had a manicure before but this looks so cool!
I love getting my nails done at the salon. But with school being so hectic, I don't get manis as much as I used to. I do love getting my nails done for the holidays and special occasions.

I stick with regular manis once a week. I did try gels once but they made my nails wayyyy too weak. Paper thin when I got them removed. I was also bored of the color by the 2nd week
ive been wanting to try this out.. it seems like a good invesment now to find a color I am willing to be stuck with for two weeks!
my friend got gel nails, and they look amazing!
I've always wanted to try gel manis!

I'm a commitment phobe when it comes to nail colors. So, this won't work for me.
I have been doing gel mani's for a couple years now and would never go back to acrylic. But to get the maximum beauty out of a gel mani, get a French manicure or what some salons call "Pink and White". The gel mani makes my nails look so perfectly natural that I don't want to cover it up with a colored nail polish. I definately recommend gel mani's.
Nice post! I've been curious about these manicures for forever, but the talk about the removal is what has always scared me off. I might try it out for my next vacation!
