NEW YORK FASHION WEEK! MODELLA CASE GIVE-AWAY! WHAT I'M TAKING AND I'M PROBABLY DYING! NO WORRIES!
Meg here! There is going to be a bunch of info on Megsmakeup.com since I have managed to finagle my way back stage for all of the hottest shows. I'm talking to all the makeup and hair guru's and getting your tips for what we'll be seeing this year! Woot, woot. The bad news? I'm a bit under the weather. I spent the red eye with period cramps and a closed up throat and sinuses that I thought would explode. Awesome. I landed and went straight to bed. I slept and popped Zicam and Tylenal cold and midal. Amazing! I woke up this morning and said "enough is enough!" I feel fine! Mind over matter. Today I've been pounding the pavement in heels and I think you'll like what I've been uncovering.
Before I left though, and before my health went from kind of bad to full blown "someone please shoot me." I made this little video of what cosmetics I bring with me when I'm on the run and hopping from spot to spot, only able to refresh in a taxi cab. I say this bag goes in my purse. That's not entirely true. It goes in my laptop bag that I carry everywhere, so it is like a purse. If you're me, you have to have both bags with you at all times. You never know when I'll be in the middle of some just breaking beauty news!
Also, Modella beauty cosmetic travel cases are a godsend. They're durable, convenient and hello! Affordable. You can pick them up at Walmart. Just because the price is low doesn't mean the quality isn't tops. I love mine and so does Jennifer Gardner, Emma Roberts and Christina Hendricks. Do you have one? Want one? Modella will send one to the person with the best makeup travel tips!
I hope you like my little clip. I'm sorry I keep swallowing and looking a little ill. It was on it's way! Keep checking back and please let me know what you want me to uncover here for you in the big apple!!

I'm sick as well, Meg. Hope you feel better! Traveling with makeup can be a challenge sometimes especially when travelling with mineral or loose powder makeup. After have my loose finishing powder and mineral foundation splatter all over my carry on suitcase from traveling, I knew I had to do something about it. I always carry Ziplock bags for my makeup so they don't spill everywhere. Also, Ziplock makes small snack size bags which are a perfect size for foundation. I use the smallest Ziplock bag for liquids and loose powders. But I keep loose powders and liquids in separate bags. A great tip if you don't have small Ziplock bags is to take a small piece of tape to tape the jar of foundation or loose powder containers. I have tried this and it works. If you have a foundation bottle with a pump and no cap, you can tape the hole where the product comes our of. One time my pump foundation spilled in my makeup bag when traveling, so I learned my lesson. If you don't want to use tape, find small containers to store items. For example, I have empty sample jars which are great for storing loose powder, loose eyeshadow and liquid items. You can find empty jars at MAC, Coastal Scents and even at the travel section in your drugstore. It is easier to travel with smaller items because they take up less space, which is great because then you'll have more room for clothes! :)
ziplock bags are a MUST. and i dont just use it for my makeup. my underthings get a ziploc (yes it's one of those GALLON sized suckas) my bathings suits get their own... so do my sons socks, and underwear. but probably the best tip EVER: saran wrap UNDER the top of my secret clinical gel solid & then in it's VERY OWN ziploc (trust me on that one)! those things expand and explode. we just recently traveled and both my husbands, and my own deodorants got all gross... but nothing else in our bags did. i also put fabric softener dryer sheets or small lavender sachets (from my drawer and closet) into our bag... just because i always feel like the bag or suitcase always smells stale.
I have never used those cases but they look so handy! I love that they are clear so you can see exactly what's in there. For travel I always make sure anything liquid is sealed up with tape and in a baggie. I had a bottle of face wash leak onto my laptop once and it hasn't clicked shut since - lesson learned! For my brushes I have one of the Eco Tools brush rolls to keep them clean and all in one place. I put my extra hair bands around my palettes, even the magnetic ones, just to ensure they don't open up when getting jostled around. I also love multi-tasking products like Maracuja oil, which I use on my face overnight (love it!) and also to soften dry skin anywhere on my body, and Monistat Anti-Chafing gel which is a great face primer or to prevent chafing especially in hot weather. I guess my main tips are to pack palettes which offer a lot of options but don't take up much space, a great balm and moisturizer, and to keep everything organized and in bags. Great idea about the cream blush and the Cat palette/Tarte powder are also in my travel arsenol :) Looking forward to reading everyone else's tips - I'm going to Mexico in January for 9 days and could use all the tips I can get!!

1. Cotton swabs have multiple uses -- I can even do a smokey eye with them. :) (Watch Emily Noel's You Tube tutorial.) And of course you can "clean up" eye makeup boo-boos with swabs. I also have some really cool olive oil swabs from DHC that come ready-to-use and individually wrapped. Can be used for many things, including moisturizing cuticles in a snap. ... 2. I save all kinds of samples/trial sizes to use for travel: makeup, skin care, lotion, shampoo. 3. Agree with everyone else who mentioned that plastic bags are a must! 4. I keep a lot of things already packed so additional prep is kept to a minimum.
I travel relatively often as hubby and I visit his family out of state. I recommend refilling travel size containers to travel with- I keep a quart sized ziplock bag full of them so I can grab them when I need to take a trip. I always take a small mirror with me so I can do my makeup next to a window for natural light- my in-laws' house and many hotels have poor lighting for makeup application and you want to make sure you don't go out with an orange face! I also have a mental list of favorite blush and e/s shades so it's a no brainer what to grab to take with me. Something I always take with me is an Urban Decay eyeliner pencil- one end is brown and the other is black so I'm ready for any occasion!
get well soon meg!I do a bit of a mr bean with my make up when I go traveling. I condense, condense and condense some more. I love my palettes, but I can never use the foundation or blush from the palettes. Take a tinted moisturiser with spf. So i always take an shadow palette, I make sure it's got my earthy tones, purples, bronze and highlighting colours. BAM there's your powder liner, eye shadow, brow powder and highlighting powder all in one. I always use my michael todd conealer as an eye primer, again killing two birds with one stone. Instead of taking a blush and a lip colour i'd just take a lip + cheek stain/cream. Instead of taking a make up remover & cleanser I take a 2 in one, i love shiseido's creamy emulsion cleanser, safe for the eyes as well. Brush wise, I only need one for the eyes... the pencil brush seem to be the more convertible. I can line my eyes with it, use it to contour my eye and apply shadow all over as well.

Make a shorter pack and don't take all your makeup along with you!
AWW MEG you are such a trooper, you poor thing, nothing worse than a red eye and feeling like crap to boot.. i hope you are feeling better! You prob should of stayed at home, but yeah that wasn't gonna happen was it, lol. Loved your vid, diggin your hair, you always look gorg. I have a wee makeup bag thing i got from target that i LOVE! and it is very similar with see through bits. I smashed my lovely korres bronzer one time traveling, so i put all the dust and bits that were left in a ziplock and use it for travel only.. it works.. not the prettiest but. 2 in 1 products are great too for travel, like ELF's highlighter /concealer, which i actually realllly like and only is 3$. I bring cream blushes too, like the NYC cream sticks as they are smallish and wont break.. i learned my lesson. I have a whole bunch of mineral edm samples in wee ziplocks too and they are great for travelling. Also samples from sephora come with me.. mascaras, wee perfume samples, skincare samples.. it makes it so fun.Oh had to add that for my foundation, my current LOVE is Missha perfect cover bb cream. it is a spf, foundation, skincare all in one.
who loves makeup? me me ME!
Love those bags. My most important travelers are blotting papers and pressed mineral powder. I also love my Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes kit, it has everything I need - including concealer - to do a number of eye looks. I also like these lippies, I think they are Clinique, they have lipstick on one end and matching gloss on the other, so I can go for a more or less intense lip look depending on what I want.
What i carry with me when I travel somewhere is a blending brush (you can use it to apply eyeshadow AND blend it properly, it's a multitasker), a kabuki brush (for powder foundation, blush, highlights, you name it), a slanted eyeliner brush and the Too Faced Glamour to Go Fairy Edition palette because it has a wide set of neutrals for day wear and a bit of color to spruce it up now and then along with a shimmery black eyeshadow that makes a GREAT liner. That combined with the blush, bronzer and gloss it includes make it an entirely self contained full face makeup set. Throw in a Stila Major Lash mascara for the ultra natural look and the tube's very slim form factor, a tube of Cargo's OneBase (concealer and foundation all in one) and a compact of Clinique Superpowder and I'm ready to travel anywhere.
Thanks Meg! Get well soon!!!
Gracie
I always keep my beauty bag light when I travel. I take all the necessary items and one eyeshadow palette and 2 lip products. I also use travel size items. I pack everything in a plastic lined bag so if anything spills it is easy to wipe down. Anything that might open or spill I keep in a ziploc bag.Get Well soon and have fun on your trip!
Oddly enough, I have been drooling over the Modella kit that you are giving away. I have a tote bag from Bath & Body Works that I have used for years for my toiletries when traveling (by car anyway - which is my typical form of traveling), but it has weird compartments that I no longer like. I'd like to do an upgrade sometime soon. As for traveling tips: I concur with the ziploc bags tip. I use them for everything. For traveling with my makeup, I love having makeup cases with multiple compartments to divide things. I currently have one from Target that looks like a typical soft-sided train case, but it has three layers to it. I put my face makeup in the bottom layer, my eye makeup in the middle layer, and my brushes in the top layer (which has an elastic pocket designed for brushes). The middle layer is wide enough to hold my Naked palette comfortably, so it is a great size. It holds everything I need, but I still need to be a bit selective to get everything to fit. I also tend to pack my makeup as I'm going through my routine getting ready to leave. I feel like it lessens the chance that I will forget something important. After I use the items, they go in my bag.
My eco-friendly makeup travel tips:1. I re-use "bubble wrap" to proctect my eyeshadow palattes and blush. In case they get banged around.2. I re-use the sample container I recv. from Sephora and MAC to store and store my: Cleanser, moisturizer, primer, conclearer, foundation & etc...3. I use garage sale sticker from the dollar store and label my Beauty product I use first to last. 4. I also pack sample size product I purchase from Target or recv. free from Walmart.com.I have learned to pack light, quick and easy. This also save you time and money. Who wants to pay extra for baggage fee's.
I re-use the Sephora sample jars too! Primer, moisturizer, and I sliced off a chunk of my favorite tarte cheek stain and crammed it into one. It's great because I don't have to haul the entire containers along with me. I pack those sample jars, my UD surreal skin foundation, the Balm TimeBalm concealer, Benefit Browzings, my stash of UD 24/7 liners, an eye shadow palette, my essential brushes, mini-mascara and two lip glosses (usually Lorac). I don't go ANYWHERE without my Vera Bradley hanging organizer. It's got all my toiletries in it because usually I can't use what the hotel provides.
I like to keep my makeup bag slim and portable, but lately it's been kind of counterproductive because my brushes won't fit in the bag. (They do if I jam them, but I don't want bent-out-of-shape brushes! I love my brushes. They are my babies.) I'm very begrudgingly considering getting a new one. Plastic is absolutely an essential when traveling-- no glass! I learned my lesson when a bottle of nail polish exploded in my bag a while back. If I absolutely must bring nail polish, I put it in with my underwear. I roll each bottle in a pair of panties and tuck it inside the matching bra, which provides a great little cushion chamber. It's a good way to keep your underwear sorted AND protect your fragile beauties. Once I forgot makeup remover, which is crucial to me because of all the waterproof makeup I wear. I discovered that most lotions will take it off beautifully (and leave your skin hydrated to boot)! When I bring shampoo and conditioner, I dole them out into humangear Go Toob bottles, sold at REI: http://www.rei.com/product/781811/humangear-gotoob-bottle-2-fl-oz I discovered them for gym use a few months back, and have never looked back. They're flexible, squeezable, see-through, fun colors, have a wide mouth and a cap ring that twists to specify what you're putting in, and have SUCTION CUPS! So you can pin them to your shower wall. They are absolutely perfect in every way. I adore the 2 oz. size. Finally, the worst problem I have with traveling is staticky hair on the plane. Especially on long flights, I can't STAND the flyaways that stick gummily to my face. The solution: dryer sheets. Carry a dryer sheet or two in your pocket, run lightly over hair whenever it starts to get unruly, and voila: soft, static-free hair on your flight.
I am super lazy and don't want to clean the messes that usually happen when i pack, even though I am extra careful. I have started to use zippy plastic bags for everything. Tooth products have their own as do hair products and makeup. I do save all of my sample packs to take with me on travels. They are super convenient and you can take so many!! I save the shampoo bottles from hotels wash them out and put my own foundation, toner, moisturizer etc. in them. Just also figured out that it is a really good idea to then use a sharpie to mark them. Forgot to do this once and had to "smell" my way to the right product. I can usually just collect everything as I get the new samples in again, the zippy bags and even if my next trip is unexpected, I can grab one of the bags and I am good to go!! Enjoy your trip and feel beter
My daughters and I were 2 hours away from taking off from Reagan DC when the FAA put the 3 oz rule into effect. We sat on the floor of the airport and dumped our suitcases, replacing the contents of bags to be checked with all of the liquid toiletries we had in our carry ons. People were dumping full bottles of beauty supplies because they had no bags they could check. I have traveled by air countless times since then and I have to say that the standard ziploc bag can fit an enormous quantity of beauty items if packed correctly. I know we all want to look our best, but if you plan to travel with only a carry-on, pick a palette of colors for eyes and cheeks and a lipstick and lip pencil which do not have to go into the ziploc as they aren't liquid. Find a powder foundation you like and again, it doesn't have to go into the plastic bag. If you collect all of those great samples that Sephora and other beauty sites give us, use them. No, I don't necessarily have my favorite products when I travel, but I have enough to look pulled together. Take a travel size of moistened cleansing towels - again, not liquid so they don't have to go into the bag. Use the products provided by the hotel. If you are lucky enough to be staying with friends or in an area with access to shopping (may not work for business travel), buy your shampoo, body wash, etc when you get there. Nail polish remover can be taken in individually packaged packets, but don't take nail polish. Grab one of those polish pens for a quickie manicure if you must. Your favorite scent may be available in a stick or pot form. If you are traveling for leisure and will be at the location for a week or more, ship what you can. It can be far less expensive than checking a bag and I don't think UPS loses nearly as much as the airlines do. Pack an extra ziploc bag! I have stuffed mine to the point that they get through security, but they aren't fit to make the trip home. I wish you all a safe, peaceful and reflective September 11.
I love travel sized products, I don't know why! I just love little miniatures of everything..
You don't look awful in the video, Meg, you look great!
can you believe I once travelled around Europe for 4 months with just a carry-on rucksack? I had all my makeup, shampoo, conditioner, contact solution (very important cuz it costs a FORTUNE overseas), plus clothes in on bag that fit the overhead compartment. I couldn't do that now with the liquid limitations, so I have small bottles of everything - shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, and contact lens solution, and carry a block of shea butter to use as my body lotion.
as for makeup, I pick two color schemes - a cool and a warm and take a lipstick/gloss, blush, liner, and two eyeshadows for each. That cuts down on how much makeup I carry with me and keeps it organized every day so I'm scrambling in the morning trying to decide what to wear!
you look amazing in the video! :) get better soon though
Well designed travel pouches with compartments in the right places are a must have for every trip! I have one each for bath toiletries, make up, skincare and a clear one for carryon (where I stuff essentials that I can't bear to check in). To beat the liquid limits, use things that are available in dry form. E.g. Fancl's facial washing powder. Get samples of what you normally use from sephora / beauty counters so you don't lug your full size bottles. Print out a copy of the liquid limit rules in case you meet an official who didn't know them.
I don't travel much so I don't really have any tips but I wanted to pop in and say Modella has som really cute makeup bags!
i just take along the essentials...and it works great!
That was such a fun video to watch, I love seeing what your essentials are to bring along when you travel. Those bags look super cute and handy as well. My tip is probably to not bring too many choices, just stick to looks that are tried and true. This way I won't be thinking about how to do my makeup on vacation, and it will take me much quicker so I can enjoy more of the vacation.
I just take essentials. Concealer, powder, mascara, 1 blush, and 1 neutral eye palette. Lip balm and eye makeup remover are also a must!
I try to put the bulk of my products in a ziplock in my suitcase.. make sure they are sealed welll.. I try to get as many multitask items as possible since they work great and take up less space by working overtime!
I don't travel much so I don't have any great traveling tips. I take essentials and sample/travel sizes of my fave products.
Makeup travel tips. I pack 3 basic shades. One shade is a bronzer that does double Duty. and a eyeliner or 2 and can use them for all sorts of shading and suck. I also bring a pinky / bronze lipstick for blush/ lips. I keep it to a ziplock or under.
I try not to take too much when I travel, but that usually backfires and I end up taking more than I need. q-tips, antibacterial wipes, makeup remover wipes and plastic bags are great for trips.
We do a lot of traveling out of the country and also within the US. Here’s what I’ve found to be helpful:
I’ve actually gotten pretty good at packing, unpacking, and repacking over the past year or so. Hope this helps!
My Blog: http://rubysrigmarole.blogspot.com/
i always carry way too much stuff with me!

Ok so I am known for being the Martha Stewart of cosmetics - I make my own pallets out of pill cases - (you know the ones 7 compartments each with individual lids - so no worry of shadow or powder mixing with lip gloss or lipstick) I have a 7 compartment one with per-fekt primer and foundation in one, setting powder, cream blush, 2 cream eye shadows, Mac lipstick (I can use as a stain or full on lipstick) and tinted lipbalm. then all I need is my deluxe sample size benefit they're real mascara and my glosses. Good to go! Pics available upon request :)
Pack less! For that, I re-use cleaned packaging I've kept or I buy travel bottles and jars! Travel with a minimum and your most-used products! And plan way ahead not to forget any products!
I keep a travel bag of necessities ready to go and just toss in essentials the morning of the trip, like mascara, that I don't want to sit around waiting for the next trip. I also use all in one palettes when I can. Also, I take more inexpensive items, just in case. I use ziplock bags for separating my hair stuff, cotton balls and q tips, any small liquids like makeup remover. I use the Olay dry towelettes so I can wet them there. Once I get back home, I inventory what is left, replenish what is needed and pack it away for the next trip so I am 3/4 ready already!

Travel tips: pack light, bring versatile things. Anything that can spill will....
Ooo what a bummer to be sick on such a fun trip!! I'm not sure off the top of my head if my travel cosmetic bag is Modella or not, but I have a pretty great quality one that I got at either Target or Walmart. Super cute polka dots, and has lasted through quite a few vacations and years!
http://www.rubysbeauty.com
I try to keep it small (samples/travel-sizes) and few (just the essentials). :)
My Beauty Blog: http://www.jennifae.com/
Hope you better.
Meg, nice video! My tip is to decant my favourite makeup into smaller jars and keep them all in a small bag so that I can grab and go. I have a huge stash of mineral makeup so this works for me.
Great ideas in that video! Thanks for sharing it. I love to keep my Mary Kay travel bag packed and ready to go so I can just grab it.

I like to bring a UNII palette with shadows and blushes, a pressed powder foundation, mascara, and two good lip colors. Little palettes are also great.

Thanks for sharing your tips. They'll be useful the next time I travel.
I try to pack only what I really need.. But I love looking back on all the black and white movies and seeing all the elegent ladies in thier hats, gloves, and makeup bags..
I always tend to travel light, so for me, it's importatnt to stick to the essentials! I'll usually have a carry on of moisturizer, lip balm, eyeliner and blotting sheets. Also, I absolutely love the handy travel containers that hold just the right amount to pass through airline checks...its great to decant lotions and cremes into!
thanks for sharing
Great tips everyone!
