HOW TO HIDE A HANGOVER!

how
Meg here! I love how much the site is growing and if any of you ever want to share a post then send it along and if it is interesting and fun we'll use it! Rere from Orlando Make-up artist
told me she had some amazing tips to hide a hangover. I would never ever need such a tip!Innocent
In the case that some of you are not as saintly as I amWink Here they are...

HOW TO HIDE A HANGOVER! It happens to the best of us...I'm talking about the morning after and I don't mean the pill! When you just can't call in to work one more time, how do you fix yourself up so that you don't look like you had about 6 too many tequila shots 7 hours prior? While there is no magic remedy I can prescribe you to alleviate your regret about the drunken events that occurred prior to you waking up with tell-tale puffy, dark bags under your eyes…I can help you disguise the physical evidence!

Here are some simple tricks and the science behind them that can help you look more awake, alert, and alive!

-First, you need to reduce the puffiness around your eyes. You can do this by applying a cold compress. Use ice, cucumbers, cold spoon, whatever. Then, you are going to want to apply an eye cream/gel that contains caffeine, brown algae, or some other de-puffing ingredient. Apply this under your eyes and on your lids. Depending on what you decide to use, you may want to check to see if that particular product is safe for eyelids.

-Prep your face! This is a step many makeup wearers do normally anyways but it is especially important to hiding a hangover! Moisturize, and then apply a foundation primer. This will help your foundation to stay put and prevent it from feathering or sinking in to wrinkles. You will also need to apply an eye shadow primer. This works in the same way as a face primer, keeping your eye shadow in place and preventing it from creasing or fading. A good primer makes the world of difference in keeping your makeup looking fresh throughout the day without having to do touch ups!

-Now to bring some color into your face, use a cream based blush that is a little brighter than what you would usually wear. We will tone this down in the next step so don’t freak if you look like bozo! Usually, we would take the blush from the apples of your cheeks, up into your temples but for hangover disguising purposes, apply it to your apples only.

-Next, you will want to even out your skin tone and chill that blush out
, go ahead and apply your foundation as you normally would. If you have an illuminating powder on hand mix a little of that into your foundation to give you a nice dewy glow. If you do not have any, do not try to substitute it with any other type of shimmery powder, just skip that step all together. Apply setting powder as normal. The purpose of doing blush before foundation is to create a more natural look. You will also get that dewy glow from the illuminating powder on top of your blush instead of underneath.

-One of the most important steps in disguising a hangover is to get rid of those bags under your eyes!
To do this, you can use a light reflective concealer on the dark spots, blending out smoothly. If your bags are too serious to be hidden with just concealer, use any orange lipstick without shimmer and dab very lightly that on your dark bags as a corrector. There are actual correctors made specifically for this purpose but if you are not a makeup artist, you probably won’t have them on hand so orange lipstick will do just fine. The orange will cancel out blue/black spots. You can then apply your concealer on top of the orange corrector and ta-da, those dark circles have disappeared! Buying an actual corrector is a great investment! Go with a salmon color, which will cover a wider range of colors than pink, green, orange, and yellow concealers.

-When applying eye makeup, skip anything with shimmer, which will highlight wrinkles and fine lines.
Stick with matte shadows, preferably light browns and natural colors, which will cover up redness on your eyes and prevent them from looking sunken in. Darker colors often create the illusion of sunken in eyes, which can be great for a sexy, smokey look. But for our purposes, we want to brighten up the face so skip those dark colors. The final step is your mascara; chose one in a lengthening formula, which will really help to open up your eyes. Skip volumizing or thickening formulas, which can cast tiny little shadows on your face and highlight under eye bags!

There it is; a complete hangover makeover with just a few adjustments to your regular beauty routine! Hopefully, you have learned:
1) Subtle ways to transform using makeup
2) When it is time to put down that Tequila shot

Stay fly ladies. Muuuah, Rere

Thanks for the tips! Anyone else want to share how to look better "The Morning After?"

Now we're speaking my language, thank you, thank you for this post. Nothing says #1 employee like coming into work looking like hell, feeling like death and slowly detoxing at your desk under fluorescent lights. I don't have any makeup tricks but I sure can make that hangover GO AWAY. WATER, of course, room temp, drink it slow, drink lots. CHEEZE-ITS trust me, the salt and carbs just want to make you feel better. MELON, honeydew or cantaloupe, its not too sweet so it wont turn your stomach, its full of water and it will get your blood sugar back in check without making you crash. And the ultimate secret ... take a MIDOL the caffeine and Tylenol in it will make you feel as beautiful as Rere's tips made you look!cheers

My number one hangover helper is Clarin's Flash Balm. This is a life saver.  I cleanse well, using a mask if possible and then primer and regular makeup.  I haven't had to put it to the test yet, but, I just know that Kumaara's Illuminating Primer will work well.  Oh, and if I can, I like to elevate my feet and legs.  Damn, I miss my slant board, I can't believe I sold that.  But, mimicking that elevation helps get blood flowing back to my face.  And there is one other trick I love, Get Fresh Spa Mineral Body Masks, comes in Grapefruit and Lemongrass. This stuff is incredible. According to the website:This spa-strength body mask targets dry and aging skin by drawing out impurities, unclogging pores and soothing rough, scaly skin. A naturally powerful purifying treatment for your entire body (not face), it is made from Dead Sea clay and minerals blended with soy, calendula, comfrey and golden seal extracts, and does not contain parabens or synthetic dyes.Apply mask all over body before bath or shower. Leave on 5-10 minutes, then rinse in the shower or soak in the tub for extra detoxifying benefits. For extra great results, exfoliate with the Get Fresh Mineral Body Scrub first and use 2-3 times a week. Choose from these fresh scents. Made in the USA. http://www.ebubbles.com/get-fresh-spa-mineral-body-masks-15-oz-bath-body-products-c-194-p-1-pr-1489.html  I love this stuff. I will probably end up using this tomorrow.  It really makes you feel better, and makes you feel rehydrated all over. If I remember, I take a couple aspirin with something with caffeine, like a Coke, before bed. I also second Andrea's idea on melon. Watermelon for breakfast helps a lot.  And I have to mention something I use, Gatorade. I HATE the taste of Gatorade, but, the Lemon Lime is a lifesaver when hungover, or when I am sick. It really rehydrates from the inside, and does it quickly.  After that, then I can handle coffee.

Good advice Rere. I can totally agree with wearing sheer, bright shades to lighten up your face. Black eyeliner is usually a staple for me everyday, but after a night of boozing it up (not that it happens often ...;) ) I ditch the black and go for a soft brown or even plum liner. It helps to make my blue eyes a little brighter, and I seem less tired than I really am. Hope this helps someone!

LOL thanks so much for this post, let me tell you I did everything wrong back when I first started drinking as far as hiding the hangover goes.  What can I say I was the poster child for that aspect of "you live and learn" and "you win some you lose some" haha.  I find contouring slightly with highlight, some mineral water spray, and you're right lengthening mascara do the trick.  Of course with some jazzy lipgloss that has some shine and nice warm colors helps, I do find even with no eyeshadow but a light bright vibrant eyeliner color on the bottom and even one that's a bit deeper on the top is better than eyeshadow under any type of "next day" scenario haha.  If I can get away with it nice chunky fun glasses cute clean updo and whimsical layered necklace goes a long way.  Fashion does help you put your best foot forward haha.

Great advice Rere!  Now where were you a few decades ago when I really NEEDED these suggestions?  However, I think I can still benefit from them.  I think these ideas will work well for non-hangover events too.  When I'm a little under the weather -- like a cold or just not enough sleep -- I look like "death warmed over" (my Mom's phrase).  And even though I try to disguise with makeup, it just never works as well as on good days.  I'm going to try your tips next time I'm not feeling well and see if I can trick myself into looking and feeling better!

I have just the same problem. When the weather changes drastically I look like I have the worse hangover of my life. The same happens to me when I spend more than 2 hours on a plain and when I'm really tired. So when I fly I carry a little bag with me, which I use before landing. I have a powder foundation, an industrial force concealer, a highlighting powder, a pencil eyeshadow in a light color (light golden, usually), a brown eyeliner pencil, mascara, a pressed blush and a pink lipgloss but I make sure iboth the blush and the lipgloss (but mostly the last one) have visible blue undertones (to brighten up my face). A little makeup bag like this would be great to carry arround on hangover days or when people go to a party or something and then sleep at someone else's place.

Thanks for the great post Rere! I wish I'd had that advice in college... although I guess at the time, everyone just looked like crap in the morning, and we were all eating hashbrowns at the campus diner around noon...ahhh the memories! :P But it would have been nice to look all fresh and lovely in the midst of all of those hungover girls! What salmon colored lipstick or concealer would you recommend? I've only ever tried one color-correcting concealer (it was for acne marks, and I used the Physicians Formula green and beige duo... but it didn't seem to work that well? Maybe I just didn't use it correctly!). I'd really appreciate it if you could give us a drugstore/cheap version! Could you also recommend a light reflecting concealer? I tried an Avon one recently and it didn't impress me. I also have Benefit Eye Bright, and find that to help a little when I put some in the inner corners of my eyes (putting it on the bags themselves, under my concealer, tends to make the concealer crease).

I definitely recommend Eve Pearl's salmon concealer!! I don't think the drugstore brands have quite caught on to the salmon trend yet...As for light reflecting concealers, try this:http://www.ionacosmetics.co.uk/go-light-reflecting-concealer-38-p.aspIt is great and paraben free! Don't forget to use a primer and SETTING POWDER (!! so important!) to prevent creasing.

I have something very important to remind EVERYONE.  Please remember that you should NEVER take Tylenol after drinking.  This is very hard on your liver.  If you think this is crazy I want to encourage you to look it up on the Internet.  My uncle is a doctor and has had patients that have done some serious damage to themselves.  Personally, I use advil if I am in this situation.

Thank you for the great tips. The last time I was hungover I swear it took me two days to recover. I think it gets worse when you get older! I was so sick that whenever I start drinking like that, my memory reminds me it was not a pretty picture. lol! I have never heard of the orange lipstick trick. Does anyone know the make of the pearl salmon concealer? Is it "eve" as per prior post? I gather its a good one for dark bags. Anyone used it before?Artcandy?

I am bookmarking this post!  I've been awfully good about avoiding hangovers (I somehow manage to remember to chug water before bed & pop an Ibuprofen) so far.  I also make sure to slather my face in Alba Botanica sea lipid cream before bed, it feels really nourishing and doesn't cause breakouts for me.  Moisturizer & eye cream are essential before bed.Robyn: the salmon concealer is made by Eve Pearl, I haven't used it personally but I've only heard raves (from lots of people).

Gread tips! I can't offer much here, have only had 1 or 2 in my life but honestly feel that all of us need to have this knowledge should opportunity present itself,LOL! My hubby however takes on the task willingly and with great joy,LOLROF! He swears by a slug of pickle juice straight out of the jar...'nuff said. :) Can I tell you that I have seen more than a few brides on their wedding day "in need" of such expert advice?I don't get why they'd "do" that to themselves but it happens a LOT! ;)Rere...can you reccommend a good "salmon" concealer? Ooh this is great! Definitely a post I'll be coming back to in the future...and the orange lipstick tip is genius, thats something I never ever would have thought of!  I'm always so scared when I go out and buy something that has a specific use (ie. an acne concealer) because it seems like I always get it home and find its a flop!  I love the idea of multitasking, lipstick and potential concealer :P

RERE,  I am curious if there is anything one can do after having a lot of drinks OR maybe just being up much later than we are used to THAT NIGHT?
I do my best to take all of my makeup off after drinking or being up extra late.  However, when I wake up in the morning I can sometimes tell I was in too much of a hurry.  I do still put my pm regime on.  But, I wonder if there is something else I should have done before I went to sleep or can do?????

Guzzle as much water as possible BEFORE YOU FALL ASLEEP! I don't care if you are still too drunk to find the water cooler! This will help your liver recuperate while you sleep and also keep your skin from dehydrating while you sleep as the alcohol continues to move through your system!

I have never, ever had a hangover when I had to go to work or class :PMy best advice would be to try to drink a bottle of water or more before you go to bed. It definitely helps me feel less dehydrated and miserable. When applying makeup the morning after I'm a huge fan of shimmery white shadow in the corners of my eyes to look more awake. I usually only do a coat of mascara on my top lashes which makes my eyes look big and open. Lastly, white eyeliner on the bottom lid and black on the top also work wonders for looking more awake.

I'm a huge fan of the yellow sunlight concelar that everyday minerals makes. I've always had dark circles under my eyes (hangover or not) and I haven't ever found something that works better. But now that you mention "salmon" I'm wondering if they have that as well. I don't know how salmon would cover better, but then again I've never had a chance to try it out. Thanks for the tip! I

I haven't had a hangover since the 80's!  It took just one for me to never want to have another one again!  I never forgot the ONE either and I probably needed some huge makeup advice the next day back then! One night I was really mad at my then husband so after he went to bed, I stayed up and drank a LARGE quantity of wine.  I was going to show him yet again and teach him a huge lesson!  He was going to pay for whatever travesty I felt he had prevailed upon me that day!  So I drank and drank and drank wine until....later that same evening, I remember being in the bathroom, with my face lying on the cool tiled floor, praying I would throw up and get rid of the private hell I was feeling at the time.  I just remember the next day I looked and felt like I was starring in yet another remake of Night of the Living Dead.  I never drank that much again and I really don't drink much at all these days either.  I maybe have a glass of white wine on occasion but it's really rare.  I don't think anything would make me drink to the point of drunkness or hangoverville the next day!  Of course, my wine-a-thon did nothing to hurt my husband back then or even spoil his day!  I was such an idiot!

Thanks for all of the hangover tips!  I haven't had one in a very long time.  In the past, whenever I drank too much and knew a hangover was eminent, I would drink at least 2 big glasses of water before bed no matter how tired I was.  I knew all that water would mean that I would be up to pee a few times in the middle of the night, but it was worth it to spare a hangover the next day.  If I was hungover the next day, I would definitely try to sleep it off, but if I needed to be somewhere, I would pop an extra strength Excedrin.  It worked wonders!

Having gone to school for the past 4 years at a big party college, I should know some of these tips by now, haha. As everyone has said, water water WATER! Before going out- a few glasses. When drinking- alternating water with alcohol (yes, it's kinda granny, but at least you know you're taking care of yourself). After- a few big glasses!Eating a banana or two the morning after is also supposed to help- it provides extra water and potassium that you might've gotten rid of through drinking. And as for hiding a hangover, the only things I have to add are to echo the concealer-- Everyday Minerals makes a nice salmon-colored concealer called "Abbott's Perk Me Up"-- covers my brown circles nicely. Also, I find that lining my lower lid very lightly with a shimmery beige highlighter (my favorite is EDM's Wet Sand blush) makes me look more perky and awake.

I agree with the water! Plenty of H20! I've never heard of eating melon the next morning, I'll give it a try though. Like ladybug, I like a yellow concealer the next morning under my eyes. I've never heard of the orange lipstick trick, but I'm going to try it. I'm always looking for something better. And I thought orange lipstick had no use in my makeup bag...hah! Thanks Rere!

Thanks so much Rere for these great tips! This doesn't happen a lot anymore but I could of use them last Sunday, ugh... I wasn't that bad but I'm sure I look like hell. I'm with stylemama on this one too, stay in bed. Or like we did last Sunday shut the blind and watch movies all day, once it while it's good but there's no way I could do this every weekend anymore like in the 90's and i was single, I do think the older you get the harder it is to shake it off. I do agree drink lots and lots of water and I take Vitamin B-complex before going to bed if I've been drinking more than two glasses of wine. and I don't get hungover the next day but Saturday night I didn't have any B-complex with me cause we stayed over at a friends house and we hadn't plan on it, just started having fun and a few drinks later. Ugh... :(

I wish I would feel good enough to put on makeup when I have a hangover.  I never look that bad when I have a hangover, but I feel really bad.  I hardly ever have hangovers, but when I do they are generally really bad.  I mean bad to where I can't move, but just lay there and sleep it off.  Before any of you start thinking how much of an alcoholic I must be, listen to this.  You don't even have to get drunk to have a hangover the next day.  I found this out last week.  I have been outside tanning a lot, and not getting quite as much water as I should be.  Well last Thursday I was drinking with one of my friends.  Over a 4 hour period I had one small glass of wed wine and 2 beers.  Not a whole lot.  I wasn't drunk at all.  I went to sleep that night, and awoke with a hangover the next morning.  It was horrible.  My body had been so dehydrated that it absorbed all the alcohol like it was water, and made me feel horrible.  I don't have any fancy beauty tips for hangovers, but I do have some food tips.  Whenever I'm going to drink I make sure and eat a decent amount, and drink a lot of water that day.  It is not a good idea to drink if you have skipped any meals that day.  Also it is a good idea to pace yourself, because if you drink too much too fast you are more likely to have a hangover.  And one of the biggest tricks I have found is this.....After a night of drinking, even if it is just a drink or two, I always make sure to down a healthy dose of water and eat before I go to sleep.  Things like potatoes, meat, bread, and pasta are all great at absorbing alcohol.  I think that is why some people crave starchier foods when they have been drinking, because their bodies need it.  I have found that it is good to drink at least 8 oz, but preferably more like 20 oz of water before lying down that night.  And don't forget the alcohol absorbing food.
