DIY PORE STRIPS!

Sweetassgal here bringing you another SUPER affordable Do It Yourself that is completely natural and well...let's face it...just totally cool!
Confession time...I'm obsessed with my skin. Closer to the truth, I'm obsessed with the stuff that resides in the pores of my skin. Yes folks...I'm a pimple picker. I know many of you will be shrieking a collective "GROSS" when you read that but for those of you who share my obsession you will truly understand that the little blackhead taking up residence on the side of my nose is going to require an immediate eviction! I am endlessly fascinated by whatever may come out of my pores and there is nothing I can do to stop myself. I've been yelled at my entire life, first by my well meaning mother, then my friends and now by my husband. In fact, he knows exactly how long it takes me to use the ladies room and if I linger even 5 seconds longer in there he yells "QUIT picking!" through the door. Busted again.
My fascination for a highly charged game of Get That Blackhead was reinforced some years back when a brilliant little invention his the aisles of my local Rite Aid...the Biore Pore strip. Pure unadulterated genius! Not only can I remove all of those nasty little black buggers from my pores without bruising my skin, but I also get the added bonus of checking out the little spiny remnants that cling to this little piece of magic. Come on now...who hasn't tried one of these and stared with bewitched delight at the proof of their effectiveness? Seriously, it's half the fun!!
Problem is, these little suckers are spendy. A six pack of the Ultra Strips sells for $7.99 which works out to $1.33 a strip! Madness people. Sheer madness. But what's a girl to do because to my knowledge Biore has cornered the market and they've got us by the nose. Literally! Well people...put down that debit card because I've got a DIY pore strip recipe for you that is pennies (and I do mean those little copper things you don't even bother to bend over and pick up on the street anymore) just pennies a use!
1/2 Teaspoon Knox unflavored gelatin (should be available in the Jello aisle most likely sold on the top shelf above the flavored gelatins)
1 Teaspoon of milk
Stir together and microwave for 10 seconds to warm. Using a clean cosmetic brush (I use my foundation brush) apply the mixture somewhat heavily to your nose and chin avoiding your eyes. Wash out your brush right away so that it doesn't harden and ruin the bristles. Let it dry for approximately 20 minutes to completely harden. Once its completely dry simply peel off the strip and voila...clean pores at next to NO cost at all!
One box of Knox gelatin is just $2 with four packets inside. Each packet will make 5 batches with enough to cover your chin and nose (and maybe even a buddies too) which comes to a whopping total of 10 cents a treatment or 5 cents each nose and chin strip! I would recommend putting a warm washcloth on your face prior to applying the mix just to loosen the debris and aid in removal. And don't forget to follow up with a great mask like Organic Apoteke's Rejuvenating Face mask!!! Just one caveat...natural gelatin doesn't smell the greatest but the scent went away after a few minutes. Mix up a batch, leave your experience on Megs and let us know if a DIY pore strip is as effective as it is economical! GLAM ON!!!

Interesting! I used to do synchronized swimming and we would put a knox gelatin/hot water mix in our hair to keep it in the bun while we did our routines. Yuck! Luckily my Clarisonic has pretty much eliminated my blackheads better than any strips or anything I've tried, so no need for this! Still cool though.
Ooh, this does sound good. I thought i was the only one that loved looking at those strips when pulled off, glad to know I'm not a freak! Do you think the gelatine mix would work on the chin too? I have so many blackheads there that just do not go away & I do use the biore face stips there. I guess I can just give it a go huh?
Ugh. I work up yesterday with a ton of blackheads all over my nose. I have to try this now.
woops *woke
someone remind me to pick up the knox next time I am at the grocery...anyone?
I am so glad i found this recipe for pores. I have a cumbersome amount of blackheads on my nose. I have tried the Elmer's glue thing, but I really just got an imprint of my nose...no blackheads. For the ladies that do not know...you are to spread a thin layer of elmer's glue onto your nose, let dry, then peel. It did not work for me.I have a weird obsession of looking at the pore strip after I peel it off me nose. It is so bizarre that all that junk was on my nose.I hope the gelatin works for me. My mom has some gelatin at her house. I will get my sister to try it with me. I will let you ladies know how it works. Fingers crossed b/c those strips are expensive. :-)
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

who would have thought you could make your own at home! thanks for the recipe. i'm going to have to try this at home one day because buying those strips can be a bit expensive. i can say goodbye to my blackheads :)

That is such a good idea!I've purchased the Biore strips but winced at the high price for a drugstore item and now I can get rid of the gunkies in my nose guilt-free!Thank you! :)
I just tried this and it totally works! (Not that I was expecting it to fail, its just exciting!)It was a little painful to peel off (like one of those peel off masks) and it did leave my cheeks/nose/chin a bit red for about 30 seconds.I also had a look at what it got out and it got out about 12 blackheads on either side of my nose crease where it joins my face near my nostrils (which I didn't know I had so yay!).The rest wasn't so much blackheads but a bit of gunk it got out. Will definately do again!! :)
I'll admit, I'm a picker too! When I first saw the picture, I had to go run into my kitchen to check, and for some reason we have lots of unflavored gelatin in my house. I think my mom uses it to make cheesecake (yum!) so I won't even have to go to the store and pick these up! I'm excited, and I'll definitely be trying this tomorrow.
And I think someone on the front page talked about using Elmer's glue as a pore strip.I saw that on acne.org and tried it myself, though I was a bit scared of all the chemicals in glue. It didn't work for me; all it did was take off some dead skin cells on my nose but it didn't actually pull out any gunk. Maybe my layer of glue was too thin? Not sure, but maybe it worked for you.I'm probably not going to try that again, just cause it didn't work the first time and I'm still a little skeptical about those chemicals.
Oh... I just had a question: Must one use MILK? like is there any other subsitute? Milk makes me gag, the smell of milk makes me gag, and hot milk is even worse... Please do you have a suggestion of something else to mix with??
switch - do you use a soy or oat based milk at all??Or do all milks make you gag??
Thanks for this great tip!! I thought I was going to have to buy pore strips for the rest of my life! You saved me a pretty penny and then some!

Does this really work and will it make you breakout?
i love diy stuff!! especially ones that dont require me to go out and buy a whole bunch of stuff that would end up costing more than just buying the product itself. so i think i will give this a try!! thanks a lot! :)
I'm finding some of the most unexpected tips and tricks on this site! I'll definitely have to try this one -- gotta remember to pick up some gelatin next time I'm at the store.
Wow, I wish I had known about this years ago! I gave up on pore strips because of the price, but I always loved peeling them off and seeing the little black heads stuck to the strip! I have gotten my blackheads mostly under control with the use of green clay masks, but I will definitely give these a go for an extra deep cleaning boost!
I'll admit it, I'm a picker too!And I love pore strips!! They've been harder and harder to find over here lately though, so I haven't been able to use one in awhile. I am definitely going to have to try this, thank you so much for sharing it with us!
Can I just tell you I tried this last night and OMG! It is intense. I don't ever remember the Biore Pore Strips that I used to use (honestly I thought they'd been extinct, hadn't heard of them in years) being this tough to pull off. I mixed the amount suggested of the ingredients but nuked it for 15 secs instead of 10 because I know my microwave is a bit on the slow side. Had an extra paintbrush from an arts and craft project, cheap brush set from Michaels or Hobby Lobby, and it was the perfect way to apply. Put on my nose, in between my eyebrows and chin area. Let set and voila! But holy bananas when its set ladies its hardcore. Went to pull it off and it was really stuck. The pore goo I left behind was evidence I need to be doing this more often.. gross right?! Followed with the Borghese Green Mud Mask (my fav) and we have smaller pores. Y'all have got to do this if you haven't already

Awesome!

Awesome idea! Thx for the tips.

i want to eat it...
Hmmm...I wonder if vegan gelatin and soymilk would work. I'll have to give it a shot.
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
I just tried this, and it did not work! I have read other accounts of it working and I don't know what I did wrong! This mixture smells absolutely horrid, it was quite gross. It hurts like heck pulling it off! Way worse than the store strips, my face is still tingling. Every single blackhead that was in my nose prior to using this, is still there. It did not remove a single one. I will give it another shot since I have the gelatine, no sure what I can do to make it work better.
this is such a great and fun idea...never would of thought you could do it at home...i love DIY
... that's genious!! i love those little strips, but i despise how expensive they are. i'm definitely going to do this. no ifs, ands or buts.
Thank you! Now if I can only save this where I will remember it somewhere... :)
This sounds great! I still have a couple of Biore strips around, but when I'm done, I'll definitely give this one a try.
I've read in a couple of articles about pore strips being really bad for your skin because they damage some *good* skin while trying to eliminate the blackheads. Makes sense right? So to any one who has actually tried this method; does it feel harsher than the strips? Because if it seems gentler it couldn't hurt to do it once in a blue moon...
the pore strips products instores never actually gets rid of my blackheads and if you know me i always complain about em. So its so great to know what your putting on your face rather than some chemical product that doesnt even work and jus digs a deeper hole in your pocket. great article, ill pick those products up nexx time i hit the supermarket also the great thing is if it doesnt work i can always eat it! :)
i'd like to try this sometime ;)
Store pore strips never worked for me, and always ended up painfully glued to my face. I'll have to give this a go.
Sounds cool! I know my 14 year old would love this!!! I'll pick up some from the store and let him!!!

I do this all the time!! It works wonders!! I was amazed the first time, as I was very skeptical. I was equally grossed out as amazed the first time I peeled it off!
I need to try this. I've wanted to try this. But I never have milk on hand.

I also used the ones that I can buy from drugstores before.. but its just too sticky on my nose after I remove it. If I put smaller amount of water, its too dry and too painful to remove. And yes too expensive to use all the time. I am a picker too... hate my pores when I look in the zoom in mirror...I will try this one at home... I hope it works! Thanks for the tip!
