WEN CLEANSING CONDITIONER HUMP DAY HAIR DAY!!

Wed, 08/22/2007 - 4:37pm
  • Hair

Every Wednesday Krista brings you the best hair out there! This would have been up earlier but I couldn't find it! Sorry about that.

So have you heard that there’s a new game in town, hair-washing-wise? Whooda ever thunk that lather, rinse, repeat would become a thing of the past? It’s worked for a hundred years, but I suppose that as with all things, new technology replaces the old.

Well, actually, it’s just more of the same. And by that I mean "more" of the same, not more of the "same". It’s lather, repeat, lather, repeat, lather, repeat, rinse. I guess it’s been around for a while -I’ve heard of it but never tried - called “cleansing conditioner”.The ever-helpful and gracious Dorothy from WEN sent me cleansing conditioners in Fig, Tea Tree, and Sweet Almond Mint. It also comes in Cucumber Aloe (yum! I love anything cucumber). They are designed to “eliminate the need for shampoo and its harsh and damaging effects.”

So here’s how it works:

1) Start of shower. Rinse hair thoroughly.

2) Apply, starting with the crown, back/nape of the head, then covering the scalp.

3) Massage hair for 1-3 minutes. Comb through.

4) Leave on for the duration of your shower.

5) Rinse thoroughly and repeat if necessary.

6) Apply 1-3 pumps as a leave in conditioner.

During this process you are supposed to continue splashing water on your hair to “create a foaming effect” and keep massaging vigorously. I’ve never been one to be on the fence about a hair product. I usually love it or leave it and know where I stand from round one. But with this one I just wasn’t quite sure...

Last week I went on my yearly family vacation. We are scattered around the globe, so for one week a year we all go away together. I brought the WEN and made everyone try it.

Here’s my summation. If you have really damaged hair and/or use a lot of styling products, this might not be the thing for you. My aunt and I have the same hair. Dry, damaged, porous, coarse, frizzy, fly-away. It’s a tall order for any product to fill. Neither of us was mad for it. I also felt like it didn’t have the “power” to wash away all the products loaded up on my head. And even after using the Leave-In condish (Sweet Almond Milk Styling Crème), I still didn’t feel like my hair was conditioned enough. Kinda weird for a conditioner-only system, no?

Everyone else who had “normal” (read: not destroyed) hair liked it. But here’s where it really hit outta the park: people loved it as a shaving cream. I’m not quite sure who started this trend, but that’s where it was a real hit. Girls on their legs, and boys on their faces.

Unbeknownst to me, this is actually a recommended use “to leave skin fresh, protected and moisturized, while maintaining PH balance.” And it can also be used to “cleanse the body without the drying effects of soaps”. They suggest you “cleanse hair/body and shave with ONLY ONE PRODUCT. Great for travel!” And I quote. Hmmm... They might be on to something there.

Ladies any thoughts on WEN?

I really wanted to like this, I really did. Like Krista said-it seemed kind of exciting to have a new way to wash your hair. I always hear horrible things about how shampoo strips your hair. But my hair just didn't feel clean afterwards. It might have all been in my head. But no bubbles=not clean. And I have to agree, not very conditioned either. I did like the scent, I got Fig to test. And I did like that it tingled a bit on my head. But I think I'll move this to my shaving supply shelf and get my stripping bubble shampoo back out.

My yes is as a leave in conditioner! I tried it in Tea Tree and when I apply it to my hair once it's dry it really helps.. It smooths things out and leaves my hair delightfully shiny! It works instantly and doesn't leave your hair heavy or greasy at all. A + as a leave in!!! The smell isn't my favorite..as tea tree kind of has that medicinal scent but it sure makes my hair look good! And the scent doesn't really linger which is nice. But as a wash/conditioner combo it just isn't enough for me. It felt great.. nice on the scalp and did leave my hair clean, but I felt it was a little too much work for not such an extreme result...Good stuff, but I'll keep it as a leave in and stick with my regular wash/condition routine.

If you are expecting this product to get rid of frizzy, dull and split-ends hair after only one use, you are selling yourself short and asking for a miracle. I have very fine, long, wavy hair. Up until a few weeks ago, it was out of control, split end, flat, no-bodied, boring hair. I decided to try the WEN product because I had tried everything else - hair strengtheners, mega conditioners, washing my hair only every other day, organic shampoos and conditioners and mousses, ionizers, flat irons - the WHOLE works!! Nothing was doing for my hair what WEN did. I gave it their monthly challenge and decided that i would wait until the end of the month before making my decision. The product delivered just like they said it would. I am still using it. I did notice a difference after the first use, but I didn't notice a real difference until after a couple of weeks of use. My hair was so damaged that I didn't think anything would repair it, except to cut off. This not only repaired it, but I can now run my fingers through my hair without them getting stuck in it! I also noticed that I am not losing as much hair. I don't know if that's because shampoos were breaking my hair, or if they were causing it to fall out, but I have less hair in the drain and on the brush. I have stopped using curling irons because 5 minutes after I would curl my hair, it would be flat - even after using mousse and hairspray to hold the curl. So, I thought I would try using a curling iron because I wanted to see if the product truly does help your hair to hold curl like the ad says. I used no mousse or hairspray on my hair and I could not brush the curls out of my hair! They lasted all day and were as tight as when I first curled them! The author's comment about not feeling like the product cleaned her hair is understandable. We are used to feeling like our hair is clean to the point that it is almost sticky. Actually, that is not a good thing, because that means that the shampoo you are using has stripped your hair of all its natural oils, etc. So, rather than strip your hair and then try to replace the oils with conditioner, WEN doesn't strip your hair in the first place. It cleans it without taking away the essentials. That, however, could be why you're feeling like it didn't clean your hair very well. I noticed however, that my hair felt clean... and fresh after using it - not weighed down.I went to a friend's house for a visit and forgot my WEN product.... ugh! So I used her shampoo - I will never do that again. I would rather not wash my hair then use shampoo. In one washing, it went back to that dry, skraggelly, limp, frizzy, hard to comb/brush through hair. I felt like I was damaging my hair all over again.I highly recommend trying this product out! You will be very happy with the results - but allow at least a month of using it before throwing in the towel. It needs time to repair your hair and then it can help your hair's natural beauty come out! Enjoy!!

I tried the sweet almond mint and while I wasn't blown away, it did make my dry, frizzy, relaxed, ethnic hair shiny which is quite a feat. It also made it a bit fluffy which was a bit of a concern. I tried the deep conditioner and that alleviated the fluffiness. I wasn't aware of the other options it came in until I read this review, so I went and ordered the fig and I will let you know how I like it once it arrives. I tried someone else's tip of putting it on dry hair and that was fantastic. I'm looking forward to playing with this stuff some more. I think it's worth a try for anyone, just order the type that corresponds to your hair.

What a surprise it was for me when we received WEN. The creator of this line is Chaz Dean and in the 90’s he was my hair stylist. Back then he hadn’t created this product but he had discovered the importance of not using shampoo on your hair. He combined 2 different conditioners in his hands and then washed my hair with that. The results were amazing. One night I was watching QVC and there he was talking about WEN so when I received my bottle of Sweet Almond Mint to test I was thrilled. This way of cleaning your hair will take some time to get used to, along with some trial and error. I have to admit it can take a little longer to wash your hair than the normal way of washing and if you don’t rinse it out all the way (it says to rinse for a minute) your hair will feel greasy. But once you figure it out your hair will love you for it. Mine has never felt softer, the shine is incredible and it looks so healthy.

Hi Meg! I was so happy to see that you were reviewing WEN since I've been a WEN girl for over two years. I actually write reviews and answer questions on QVC's Beauty Boards about WEN on a regular basis. WEN is actually wonderful for extremely damaged hair! There is a learning curve with WEN but once you get it down, it becomes your HG product! If you go to Chaz Dean's website, chazdean.com and then go to "products", you'll find some helpful instructions at the bottom of the page. These are only guidelines though. I always suggest that you try using WEN as an overnight hair masque. The Fig is the most deeply conditioning and is excellent as a treatment. As far as regular use goes, the Fig is perfect for coarse, curly or ethnic hair but it wouldn't be a good choice for someone with fine hair. If you have dry ends, you could add some of the Fig to your ends and try the Sweet Almond Mint, Cucumber Aloe or the new Lavendar on the rest of your hair. You don't need to continue to splash your hair with water as you use it. After you've applied it, you'll just give your hair a couple of splashes so you can work up a slight creamy "lather". The biggest mistake that newbies make is not using enough product. For instance, I have fine, colored, layered, wavy hair and it's about 2-3 inches below my shoulders. I generally use about 40 pumps (from the 16oz bottle). If you have shoulder length hair, I'd suggest 30-34 pumps. It's also very important to give yourself a very vigorous scalp massage and to leave it on for 5 minutes. After that first massage, I use a wide tooth comb and then pin it up for the rest of my shower. You and I seem to have similar hair issues and I try to use WEN as an overnight hair masque at least every two weeks and I always suggest that newbies with hair issues start off with leaving it on overnight or for at least an hour or longer. The Fig and the Tea Tree are the most moisturizing. For anyone with fine hair, it's still okay to use the Fig or TT as your deep conditioner. You can also use it on your ends if you happen to have problems with dry ends. But, stick with the Sweet Almond Mint, Cucumber Aloe and/or Lavendar on the rest of your hair. I own all of the various flavors and I use them all. I also use all of the WEN oils as part of my deep conditioning treatment. I don't use any kind of detox shampoo. In fact, I don't cleanse my hair with anything but WEN and I haven't for over two years. My color stays so much more vibrant and it doesn't fade which is huge when you're not exactly a "ahem" natural redhead! ;) I actually became friends with Chaz because he'd heard about the reviews I'd been writing on the Q boards. I've had many women email me with questions and I've even spoken with some on the phone to help advise them. So, if anyone here needs a little bit of extra assistance, I'm happy to help. I'd also encourage anyone who's thinking of trying WEN to make sure to watch the "how to" video on Chaz's website and to read the instructions very carefully. Don't give up on it too easily. I've had so many people write to thank me for encouraging them to persist a little longer. Hope you'll consider trying the hair masque. :)" Instructions for Use Start by rinsing hair thoroughly and completely for at least 1 minute. Apply 8-10 pumps to the crown of head, 8-10 pumps to nape/back of head. Massage vigorously into scalp for 2-3 minutes and add an extra splash of water to help evenly distribute through the ends. Now add remaining 10-20 pumps (depending on hair length) through the mid-shafts and ends, to thoroughly cleanse and hydrate the hair. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb and clip up for the remainder of the shower. Leave on for at least 3-5 minutes. The longer you leave it on the better for maximum results. Rinse thoroughly and completely for 1-2 minutes by massaging your scalp and running your fingers through to the ends. The more product you use the better the results. * For hair above your shoulders, use a minimum of 20 pumps. * For hair down to your shoulders, use a minimum of 30 pumps * For hair past your shoulders use a minimum of 40 Then apply 1-3 pumps of the Cleansing Conditioner as a leave-in conditioner to soaking wet hair, starting at the back of the head and working through to the ends. Immediately after, add 1-3 pumps of the Sweet Almond Mint Styling Crème to soaking wet hair starting at the back of the head and working thought to the ends. Let hair dry naturally, style or wrap a towel around your head to absorb moisture. Do not abrasively dry your head with a towel as this will stress the hair and cause it to frizz.Additional Suggestions1. You can cleanse daily but when used properly you should only have to cleanse every 2-3 days. Our 16oz size should last you between 4-6 weeks. 2. For extra hydrating and conditioning, you can use the Cleansing Conditioner as an overnight deep hydrating mask treatment. Simply leave on the hair after you have cleansed, cover hair with a shower cap or plastic bag overnight, and rinse out thoroughly in the morning.3. If you have curly or ethnic hair, use WEN Sweet Almond Mint, Tea Tree or Fig Oil. When applying your leave-in, mix 2-6 drops of WEN Oil to the Cleansing Conditioner first and then 2-6 drops of WEN Oil to the Sweet Almond Mint styling Crème. You may also need to increase the amount of WEN Oil and pumps of the Cleansing Conditioner and Styling Crème for different hair texture.Create a Refresher SprayIn a 6oz spray bottle mix 4 pumps of WEN Cleansing Conditioner, 2-4 drops of WEN Oil and 2 pumps of Sweet Almond Mint Styling Crème. Use warm water initially to help mix ingredients and shake well before each use. "FYI, the Refresher Spray is great if you're a cury headed gal!

Ok. I ordered the products off of the website and waited and waited and did google searches up the wazoo learning everything I could about this product. I received it last Friday so even though I'd washed my hair with my normal shampoo that morning, I couldn't wait to try it. So I tried it that night. I have long dyed reddish brown hair that sees a dryer and immediately frizzes so I was looking for this to make it more manageable and smooth. I was impressed. I have the Sweet Almond and it smells great. I loved the way it makes my hair feel!!! So since it was around time to color again I decided to go ahead and color on Saturday night. I used my normal shampoo to wash the color out (plus I picked a redder color, called Sweet Pepper) but I used the Wen Cleansing Conditioner in combination with the Wen Deep Conditioner and left that in my hair for about 45 minutes. Even after that my hair is polished and manageable and SOFT!! I'm playing with how to dry it because in Minnesota when its 35 degrees below zero windchill you do NOT go outside without having dry hair unless you want pnemonia so, I gently towel dried it but didn't use the towel as much as I had in the past. But then I blow dry on high heat as usual and am NOT getting a frizzy mess!!!! I'm using 24 pumps to wash and am using 2 pumps as a leave in, followed by the styling cream. My hair is about 2 inches below my shoulders so I consider it medium to long. And so far 24 pumps seems to be just right but I've only been using Wen for 3 shampoos so far. But so far so good.

Well, it's me again. Ok. I bought the Wen, used it, actually liked it ALOT. HOWEVER, the bottle only lasted 2 weeks. I'm not made of money so I did a google search for cleansing conditioner like Wen and found Hair One. Its much cheaper at $10.99 for 12 ounces and since I've only used it once (the Olive Oil one) I'm not going to say I've switched quite yet. BUT, using it the same as Wen (which is a bit different than the directions on the bottle) I can say that at least after one use, I like it. Same result as with Wen but about 1/2 the price. But we'll have to wait and see if it weighs my hair down or has alot of buildup etc...

for the ones who claim wen doesnt work for them they are probably not using the product correctly and should make the effort to learn how it works because this product works on all hair types. I find that leaving it in at least 5 minutes 20 is better and 30 wouldnt hurt , heat on your head while its in your hair is good too. lightly massage if your hair is dry no need to work it hard and no need to create lather its not necessary. towel dry hair . if you have not bought it just go to qvc or wen.com the product is easy to return no questions asked. it took me one year to try it and now im sold its an awesome product it does not strip your hair of natural oils everything  and anything with sulfates will dry your hair out.suds are not good for hair or skin .wen sells out everytime its on qvc the number of sales are mind boggling . this is the cleanser  of the future and most certainly other big names in hair care will be following this method of cleansing and coming out with their own non sulfate products. wen now has a body cleanser too. i  use the hair stuff for both and for shaving and a small pea size drop for leave in styling. use it on your pets it wont dry their coat out. wen oils are amazing too if not wen then argan oil is a must a night .moroccan is a good one but so long as its pure argan it works on hair and skin and face too.

*UPDATE* I bought the  WEN fig cleansing conditioner, the first time I used it, I dried my hair the usual way (diffuser) and my very curly hair was flat.  it relaxed my curls so much!  My hair was very soft, looked good except for the lack of curls. so I decided that I need to purchase a product to help with curl definition when I dry my hair.  I was in the sephora store a few days later and bougth some Living Proof styling cream for curly hair...keep the curls get rid of the frizz. Well that was the ticket!  I love the way my hair feels when I use WEN then I apply a quarters size dollop of Living Proof styling cream for curly hair dry my hair with the diffuser and WOW...my hair looks healthy and my curls are unbelievable!  I just LOVE IT,  I am going to QVC and order some more WEN, I think I may buy some of the WEN styling products too but...I am very happy with the combo I am using now.  have a Great Weekend Ladies

For some reason, using WEN by itself did not work for me.  I have used this product many times and it left my hair feeling very coated.  Since I have a considerable amount left, I usually mix it with my shampoo or deep conditioner.  It seems to work better that way for me.

I got excellent results with Wen the first two times I used it and I could never get the same results again.  I have continued to use this product though for over a year.  The initial results were so terrific that I set about trying to figure out what changed.  After many experiments, I think the problem was with my hard water and the mineral deposits it left on my hair.  Wen is so unique and wonderful when it works, that you owe it to yourself to try it if you haven't yet.  I read on the website for Chaz Dean's salon www.chazdean.com: Enjoy your WEN and see your hair and its texture change instantly. It's true!  When it works you find yourself playing with your hair all day because it feels so different! It takes a while to get the technique right, but stick with it.  In a few uses you'll get the hang of it.  It is very hard to go from Wen back to regular shampoo and conditioner.  Even the most high end salon hair care does not give the same results.  My hair just seems to crave Wen.  If you haven't tried Wen, try it once.  A 16oz bottle is $28.00, not that bad if it completely changes the texture of your hair and gives you the hair of your dreams!  I would buy it from the Chaz Dean website though, www.chazdean.com.  This is the website for his actual salon in Hollywood, Chaz Dean Studio.  You really won't find it much cheaper and you are guaranteed authentic, fresh product with great customer service.  They have a great forum called, Get Satisfaction, where you can post questions or comments and a Chaz Dean rep will answer you within 24hrs.

The longer you use this stuff, the better it works. Try it for a week to see if it you like it better than after just one shot. I do agree that for people who use a lot of hair products (gel, spray, etc.), it's not as good. For my daughter, who has long straight hair she puts nothing in, it's been fantastic.

I have a new use for Wen! Still don't like it for my hair, after many, many, MANY tries, and have relegated it to leg shaving, which it's WONDERFUL for. But I got a little crazy last night, so when I reached into the shower to grab my bottle of "Say Yes to Carrots" Eye and Face Make-Up Remover when my eye caught that bottle of Wen. So...I pumped some out, applied it to my closed eyes, then my face, massaged it around and rinsed - WOW! I was wearing L'Oreal's Beauty Tubes mascara and EVERYTHING came off in a flash, leaving my skin very clean, but dewy. And no pulled eyelashes...Try it, please!!!

I would be careful of using this as an eye-makeup remover if you have sensitive eyes.  I tried this and although it took my mascara off in one swipe, I felt like I had put Vick's Vapo-Rub on my eyes.  The menthol feeling stayed on my eyelids and stung for about 5 minutes.

I've heard about this, but after checking out the reviews on here, I think I'll pass. It seems like part of the people here have had amazing results, some have had just okay results, and the others weren't impressed. If I'm going to shell out a ton of cash on hair products, I'm pretty sure I'd want something that I knew had a really great chance of working. This doesn't sound all that promising, imo.

Once you have applied the appropriate number of pumps for your length of hair and massaged, you need to clip it up or put on a shower cap, until the end of your shower.  It does work better the longer you leave it on.  I always clip up my hair once I have the conditioner in it, whether I am using Wen or a regular conditioner.

I totally agree Desert Doll! I reall wanted to like this. What a great concept! I also have dry hair, that tends to break more than not and closing in on a zillion flyaways. I was disappointed with the WEN after seeing it used on models and then blown dry by Chaz Dean. Of course they looked great but my hair... not so much! I asked my hairdresser about using anything that wouldn't weigh my hair down (which is something I struggle with) while providing some moisture. The most she could recommend was anything sulfate free, which is the compound in shampoos that dries it out mostly, I think. Anyways, most salon quality sulfate free shampoos seem to work well but I still have not found that miracle hair product so my locks can be Farrah worthy. CHI and Ookisa worked the best for me.

Fine, wavy hair doesn't need to be weighed down.  It sounds good as far as its ability to hold a curl, but I'm hesitant about the 40 pumps for long hair.  That's a Lot of product, making the cost prohibitive for me.  And based on the reviews of its fragrance, it doesn't sound pleasant as well.

Ok, so I admit, I haven't tried the real product yet. I have tried the Sallys Hair ONE and I love it, I use the tea tree formula. It left my hair soft, bouncy and tangle free. I have a huge problem with tangles and can't really use conditioner b/c of my oily hair. I was also drawn to the price and being able to return by just going back down to my local Sallys, no hassle mailing the product back.PS-It does take quite a bit of product and I have hair almost down to my shoulders. The lack of suds is also kinda weird to me.

im a sucker for all in one products.. this sounds great but with my hair, i don't even use conditioner... im on a shampoo only regimine instead haha :)  my hair never tangles and feels soft and smooth without conditioner, conditioner just makes my hair really oily :(  sounds good for people with normal hair though :D

I forgot I had this, I have the Sweet Almond Mint.  I used it again recently and forgot how much I love it.  I have really curly (read frizzy dry) hair and this tames my hair and leaves it shiny.  I am going to order more.  Thanks for the reminder.

I have ALWAYS been interested in trying this. I have curly hair, and have heard that I should stay away from shampoo. I have not listened to that warning, yet. One thing about Wen that worries me is how much product has to be used per session. I have the same shampoo-6 oz and conditioner-5 oz since February (homemade from an awesome etailer!), but with Wen I'd have to buy more product-16 oz every 4-6 weeks! Yikes. Other than that, it sounds just fabulous. Someday I'll give it a try.

I really did not care for these products....I purchased a four pack of differing scents.  The one thing that worries me is that they do not contain sulfates however, do contain silicones.   Silicones build up on the hair if not removed by sulfates......This product left my hair dry and lifeless :*(

I haven't used Wen, but was intrigued by the idea of a no-shampoo.  I read the ingredients of the Wen product and discovered that they are quite similar to the ingredients in the Walgreens BioInfusion conditioner, which is frequently on sale for $5.99 or $6.99.  They also have an organic line that I have been using and they come in a few different formulas.  I tried it and really like the results.  There are no silicones in the BioInfusion either.  My curly chlorine and sun-drenched hair feels nice and soft.  It also looks a lot shinier.  Next week I will be at the beach, so the conditioner only regimen will get a real test.  I'm bringing my shampoo just in case, but I'm hopeful this will work.

Thanks!  I am going to try this.  I've been having a problem with shampoos/conditioners because I recently found out that I'm having allergic reactions to something in the herbal lines.  I love sweet almond smell but I think it might be one of the culprits.  Walgreen's here I come!

I am so glad there is a review on here about this system.  I have been wanting to try this after seeing the infomercial on it for months now.  The infomercial makes it look like the best product on the market.  I have bleach blonde, dry, parched hair that breaks.  I know, this hair needs help.  That is why i am so willing to try anything and everything for my hair.I really really really want to try this system.  My hair will drink it up!  8-)

I LOVE this product... but I don't use it. I have thick hair past my shoulders and was using the HUGE bottle (roughly $50 from qvc.com) in 6 weeks. I went through the trial kit in about three weeks. My slightly wavy, slightly damaged hair looked amazing, but I just can't afford it. :(  If you have the spare cash, I highly recommend it. If you don't... I have been using the extra moisturizing, sulfate free, foaming (!) shampoo and conditioner from L'oreal. It kind of stinks at first, but I love the smell now and it works... not as good as WEN, but it's not bad.

Thanks for the honast review. I have seen the infomercial and was very interested. After reading your review, I don't think it's right for me. (I fit into the damaged, frizzy, uncontrollable hair area).

I tried this, I so wanted to love it, especially because lately, my hair feels like crunchy straw. I used it a few times, and the first time, my hair looked really good, felt soft, seemed healthier. After a few uses, however, it felt dirty, looked dirty, and I couldn't wait to get home and wash it with real shampoo!! I just bought an entire system from Umberto of Beverly Hills, I saw him on "Split Ends", and when I saw his stuff at Target, I thought I'd give it a try. I spend about $35 on 4 products, and I'm going to try it tonight and see how it works for me. At this point, I am convinced that my hair has a life of it's own, and it will do what it wants pretty much no matter what I do! That said, I am overdue for a trim, and highlights, but keep finding other things to Spend $150 on, or just don't want to spend a day off doing it. I think if I had liked it more since my last cut, I would feel a little differently about it.

I like the concept behind this product, but it seems like a waste. You must go through tons of product and it seems like this would take a bit longer then the normal wash and condition. However, if it's working for some of you, that's great. I just know I wouldn't like it. It reminds me of the oil cleansing method, but for hair.

There is too many steps into this product. Is it really necessary to repeat?
